The government was forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The loss of Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Assad. It stands at an important intersection between Damascus and Syria’s coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus — the Syrian leader’s base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. The pro-government Sham FM reported that government forces took positions outside Syria’s third-largest city, without elaborating. Rami Abdurrahman who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian troops and members of different security agencies have withdrawn from the city, adding that rebels have entered parts of it. The capture of Homs is a major victory for insurgents, who have already seized the cities of Aleppo and Hama , as well as large parts of the south, in a lightning offensive that began Nov. 27. Analysts said Homs falling into rebel hands would be a game-changer. The rebels' moves around Damascus, reported by the monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including several provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. For the first time in the country’s long-running civil war, the government now has control of only three of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Latakia and Tartus. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions, led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. In their push to overthrow Assad's government, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. The rapid rebel gains, coupled with the lack of support from Assad's erstwhile allies, posed the most serious threat to his rule since the start of the war. The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country is Assad's chief international backer, said he feels “sorry for the Syrian people.” In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands went to Syria's border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told The Associated Press, and those still open ran out of staples such as sugar. Some were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle (in Damascus) or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reached the outskirts of Damascus since 2018, when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a yearslong siege. The U.N. said it was moving noncritical staff outside the country as a precaution. Assad's status Syria’s state media denied social media rumors that Assad left the country, saying he is performing his duties in Damascus. He has had little, if any, help from his allies. Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine . Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up Assad's forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday posted on social media that that the United States should avoid engaging militarily in Syria. Pedersen said a date for talks in Geneva on the implementation a U.N. resolution, adopted in 2015, and calling for a Syrian-led political process, would be announced later. The resolution calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with U.N.-supervised elections. Later Saturday, foreign ministers and senior diplomats from eight key countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran, along with Pederson, gathered on the sidelines of the Doha Summit to discuss the situation in Syria. In a statement issued late Saturday, the participants affirmed their support for a political solution to the Syrian crisis “that would lead to the end of military activity and protect civilians.” They also agreed on the importance of strengthening international efforts to increase aid to the Syrian people. The insurgents' march Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were marching toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. HTS controls much of northwest Syria and in 2017 set up a “salvation government” to run day-to-day affairs in the region. In recent years, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has sought to remake the group’s image, cutting ties with al-Qaida, ditching hard-line officials and vowing to embrace pluralism and religious tolerance. The shock offensive began Nov. 27, during which gunmen captured the northern city of Aleppo, Syria’s largest, and the central city of Hama , the country’s fourth largest city. Opposition activists said Saturday that a day earlier, insurgents entered Palmyra, which is home to invaluable archaeological sites had been in government hands since being taken from the Islamic State group in 2017. To the south, Syrian troops left much of the province of Quneitra including the main Baath City, activists said. Syrian Observatory said government troops have withdrawn from much of the two southern provinces. The Syrian army said in a statement that it carried out redeployment and repositioning in Sweida and Daraa after its checkpoints came under attack by “terrorists." The army said it was setting up a “strong and coherent defensive and security belt in the area,” apparently to defend Damascus from the south. The Syrian government has referred to opposition gunmen as terrorists since conflict broke out in March 2011. Diplomacy in Doha The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey, meeting in Qatar, called for an end to the hostilities. Turkey is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar's top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticized Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country’s underlying problems. “Assad didn’t seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Sheikh Mohammed said he was surprised by how quickly the rebels have advanced and said there is a real threat to Syria’s “territorial integrity.” He said the war could “damage and destroy what is left if there is no sense of urgency” to start a political process. The Titans (3-9) also must bounce back from last week's ugly loss at Washington that cost this franchise yet another chance to string together consecutive wins for the first time in more than two years. “We know that this is a big opportunity for us to develop as a team and to create and to continue developing our identity,” quarterback Will Levis said. “And so we’re going to make sure that we do our best throughout these next few weeks to do that.” The Jacksonville Jaguars (2-10) lost Trevor Lawrence for the rest of the season after the hit he took from Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair in last week's 23-20 loss to Houston. This mood highlights ongoing challenges such as inflation, unemployment, and unpredictable market conditions that affect businesses nationwide. At the same time, the data shows diverse perspectives about the viability of their small business among owners. While 27% are not optimistic at all about the future of their business, about 3/4 of entrepreneurs report they are very optimistic (23%), optimistic (26%), or cautiously optimistic (25%) about their business's viability in the coming year. NEXT saw similar upward thinking about business owners' expected profits in the first six months of 2024. But others, such as retail and hospitality, are more vulnerable to fluctuating consumer spending and labor shortages. For example, an Intuit holiday shopping report reveals that 23% of consumers are reducing their holiday spending due to the rising costs of essentials like groceries and gas. This holiday season, consumers plan to spend an average of $294 at small businesses, compared to last year's $485—a 40% decrease. While NEXT data found that 12% of respondents closed all or part of their business, these closures were outweighed by growth. 10% say they've expanded their products or services, and another 7% opened a second location for their business. Despite difficulties, many business owners are holding steady: 17% expect no major changes in the next six months. And as planning for the first half of 2025 planning begins, business owners are thinking about growth. Some entrepreneurs will focus on expansion, with 14% planning to launch new products or services and 8% preparing to open second locations. These proactive efforts indicate confidence in the economy and market potential. Cost management will also play an important part, with 12% of businesses increasing prices to offset rising expenses and 11% expecting to cut costs in the coming months. However, not all businesses are as confident in their resilience; 12% are concerned about possible closure due to persistent financial difficulties. MUMBAI: The Mumbai cyber police have arrested a 24-year-old man from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly being part of a gang that extorted money from people via an online loan app. The gang blackmailed creditors with sexually morphed photographs and extorted large sums of money from them, according to officials. The accused, Gulshan Kumar, was arrested by a team from the Bandra police station’s cyber cell. According to the police, his role was to receive the extorted money deposited in different bank accounts, withdraw it in cash and give it to another intermediary, who would convert it into cryptocurrency and send it to foreign destinations. The police have recovered nine debit cards and three mobile phones from Kumar, who was booked under section 308(2) (extortion) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and section 67A (publishing or transmitting sexually explicit material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act. He has been remanded to police custody till Friday. According to the police, the gang that Kumar was part of would entice people to use an app providing short-term loans. They would then send the users phishing links that were disguised as links to submit documents for applying for loans. If users clicked on these links, the gang would gain unauthorised access to their phone galleries and contact lists. The gang would then create sexually morphed images of the users to blackmail them and extort money from them even if they had repaid their loans, said the police officer. The gang used virtual private networks to mask their IP addresses.

The NBA got viewers for Christmas, even while going up against NFL games. The NBA's five-game Christmas lineup was the league's most-watched in five years, with the games averaging about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, the league said Thursday based on Nielsen's preliminary numbers. It's an 84% rise over the NBA's Christmas numbers from 2023. The Los Angeles Lakers’ 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors — a game pitting Olympic teammates LeBron James and Stephen Curry — averaged 7.76 million viewers and peaked with about 8.32 million viewers toward the end of the contest, the league said. Those numbers represent the most-watched NBA regular season game in five years. “I love the NFL,” James said in his televised postgame interview Wednesday night. “But Christmas is our day.” The NBA said all five Christmas games on its schedule — San Antonio at New York in Victor Wembanyama's holiday debut, Minnesota at Dallas, Philadelphia at Boston, Denver at Phoenix and Lakers-Warriors — saw year-over-year viewership increases. Wednesday's numbers pushed NBA viewership for the season across ESPN platforms to up 4% over last season. Cuts to community services are feared as a new poll shows one in three charities unsure of their survival. or signup to continue reading A poll of 56 leaders and chief executives of key charity and not-for-profit organisations found 37 per cent were more uncertain about their body's future than three years ago. Only 55 per cent of respondents to the survey, conducted by Piazza Research in September, were somewhat or highly confident their organisation's future was in hand. The findings signalled a need for stronger government support, said the Community Council of Australia which commissioned the report. "When more than a third of charities are talking about having an uncertain future, you're highlighting a high level of unmet need," chair Tim Costello said. "That can only mean frustration for charities and the communities they serve." Some 93 per cent of respondents expect the cost of their operations to worsen over the next year. Among the biggest challenges identified are competition for resources such as funding, skilled staff, and volunteers (73 per cent), economic downturns (71 per cent), environmental factors including climate change and natural disasters (56 per cent) and social and demographics trends (52 per cent). There was some hope of technological advancements (27 per cent) and positive attitude shifts from funders (16 per cent) but they were outweighed by broader concerns. The sector employs more than 1.4 million Australians, mobilises 3.5 million volunteers and turns over more than $200 billion each year. Some charities might have to consider withdrawing some of their services to survive, the council's chief executive David Crosbie said. "For years charities have been saying the real costs of providing services to our communities is much higher than the funding being provided," he said. "This new research reinforces previous findings that the biggest issue confronting charities is the lack of support to meet rising costs and increasing demand." The Salvation Army is one charity in particular that is feeling the heat of surging demand amid the festive season. A separate poll of 2004 people by Pureprofile on behalf of the Salvos suggests 6.3 million Australians (29.9 per cent) will struggle to pay their rent or mortgage this Christmas. More than one in three (35.8 per cent) of those surveyed said they will have less people over on Christmas Day due to the cost-of-living crisis and 9.3 per cent are reaching out to charity for help this Christmas, including 54 per cent for the first time. Major Bruce Harmer said the charity had never seen such volume and widespread need across the country in its 140-year history. "It is truly heartbreaking to see the despair and devastating decisions Australians are having to make in order to provide for their families this Christmas," he said. "As we see the devastating results of this research, we are reminded that every number and statistic represents real people, and we see that every day of the year amongst those who reach out to the Salvos for support."
