The Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Bamalli in Zaria has said that the decision to demolish the city’s 188-year-old Malam Abdulkarim Central Mosque was a painful decision. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bamalli, while speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the mosque’s reconstruction, said it was a decision which weighed heavily upon the Emirate Council. He said the decision was not made lightly but the emirate had no option than to take it as the safety of lives remained the Council’s top priority. “Your well-being and security have always been at the forefront of our thoughts and actions,” the Emir said. Bamalli commended the Kaduna State Government for supporting victims of the mosque’s collapse in 2023, and paying compensation for houses affected by the mosque’s expansion project, among other initiatives. He also lauded the highest donation of N2 billion by Alhaji Abdussamad Isyaka-Rabi’u through the ASR Africa and BUA Group. The Emir noted that the historic mosque, built in the 1830s, had served as a beacon of faith, community engagement and resilience. Earlier, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Abbas Tajudeen, had said the collapsed mosque was one of the biggest and largest historical heritage of building technology in Nigeria. The Speaker, who is the member representing Zaria Federal Constituency and holder of the traditional title of “Iyan Zazzau”, said the central mosque’s rebuilding has an 18-month completion period. He, however, said the resources available would only be able to reach 50 per cent completion, urging philanthropists to donate generously for the timely completion of the gigantic project. The Speaker restated the commitment of the National Assembly towards supporting the timely completion of the project. In his remarks, Gov. Uba Sani of Kaduna State reiterated the state government’s continued commitment to supporting the project to ensure prompt completion. He added that the state government was in touch with key stakeholders towards generating more funds for the project. NAN reports that, on Aug. 11 in 2023, the 188-year-old mosque collapsed while hundreds of worshippers were observing afternoon prayers, killing seven worshippers and injuring many others.

Image: https://ecdn6.globalso.com/upload/p/1205/image_other/2024-11/b.png Adjustable Overload Settings: Tailoring Protection to Specific Needs One of the most notable features of the WLM6RT-160A-3300 3P is its adjustable overload settings. Unlike traditional circuit breakers that offer fixed protection levels, this MCCB [ https://www.w9-group.com/adjustable-mccb/ ] allows for the customization of its overload protection parameters. The overload settings can be adjusted to 0.7ln, 0.8ln, 0.9ln, and 1.0ln, where "ln" refers to the rated current of the breaker, which in this case, is 160A.This adjustability is crucial as it enables the MCCB to provide optimal protection tailored to the specific needs of the electrical system it is safeguarding. For instance, in systems where temporary overloads are common, adjusting the overload setting to a higher threshold can prevent unnecessary tripping, ensuring uninterrupted power supply during normal current fluctuations. Conversely, in systems where precise overload protection is essential, setting the threshold lower can provide enhanced safety measures. The adjustable overload settings also facilitate better harmonization between the MCCB and the connected electrical equipment. By aligning the protection levels with the operational characteristics of the equipment, the risk of damage due to overcurrent events is significantly reduced. This, in turn, extends the lifespan of the equipment and minimizes maintenance costs. Instantaneous Protection with Adjustable Settings: Swift Response to Short-Circuit Faults In addition to its adjustable overload settings, the WLM6RT-160A-3300 3P also offers instantaneous protection with adjustable settings. Short-circuit faults pose a significant threat to electrical systems, as they can lead to severe damage and even fires if not detected and interrupted swiftly. The adjustable instantaneous protection settings of this MCCB address this concern effectively. The instantaneous protection settings can be configured to 7ln, 8ln, 9ln, and 10ln, providing a high degree of customization based on the specific requirements of the electrical system. This flexibility ensures that the MCCB responds rapidly to short-circuit faults, limiting the damage and downtime associated with such events. Moreover, the adjustable instantaneous protection settings help minimize the risk of nuisance tripping. Nuisance tripping occurs when a circuit breaker trips unnecessarily due to transient overcurrents that do not pose a significant threat to the system. By fine-tuning the instantaneous protection settings, the WLM6RT-160A-3300 3P can distinguish between genuine fault conditions and harmless transient events, ensuring reliable and uninterrupted power supply. Combining Thermal and Magnetic Protection for Comprehensive Safety The WLM6RT-160A-3300 3P leverages a combination of thermal and magnetic protection mechanisms to provide comprehensive safety for electrical systems. The thermal protection component monitors the current flowing through the circuit and trips the breaker if the current exceeds the safe limits for a sustained period, preventing overheating and potential fires. The magnetic protection component, on the other hand, responds instantly to high fault currents, such as those caused by short circuits. The adjustable instantaneous protection settings mentioned earlier are part of this magnetic protection mechanism. By combining these two protection methods, the WLM6RT-160A-3300 3P ensures that both slow-burning overloads and sudden short-circuit faults are effectively managed. Ease of Installation and Maintenance Beyond its advanced protection features, the WLM6RT-160A-3300 3P is also designed for ease of installation and maintenance. What We Know About Brian Thompson’s Murder Thompson, 50, was the CEO of the health insurance division of the $550 billion UnitedHealth Group and was in New York City on Wednesday for UnitedHealth Group’s investor meeting. He was shot from behind just before 7 a.m. on Dec. 4 outside of the New York Hilton Midtown—where the meeting was being held—and was hit in the back and right calf, after which the suspect fled the area on foot and on an electric bike. A Minnesota resident, Thompson had served as chief executive since April 2021 and had been with UnitedHealth Group since 2004. A video of the shooting showed the suspect walk out behind Thompson—who did not have a security detail—before firing multiple times. Prior to Mangione’s arrest, police said they believed the shooting was “a brazen targeted attack” and searched New York City before saying they believed the suspect had left the city on a bus. Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News “there had been some threats,” but didn’t provide details on what the threats were. Thompson had two sons, one who just graduated from high school and one still in high school. Police had been searching for the gunman by utilizing diving teams in Central Park, flying helicopters, searching through security cameras in the area, maintaining drones and using dogs. They released several photos of the suspected shooter since Wednesday. What Do We Know About Luigi Mangione? Mangione, a Maryland native, was last known to be living in Honolulu, has no prior arrest history in New York or elsewhere in the country, and he may have attended college in Pennsylvania, police said. Social media pages that appeared to be Mangione’s said he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with bachelor's and master's degrees in computer and information science in 2020, after attending the Gilman School for high school. A LinkedIn page appearing to belong to Mangione describes internships at the Johns Hopkins Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics and Firaxis Games before going on to work as an engineer for TrueCar, a car shopping website based in California, where he’d been employed for four years. The Times also reported Mangione worked as a counselor in the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies Program in 2019. How Was Luigi Mangione Caught? New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mangione was recognized in a McDonald’s in Altoona and was reported to local police, who then found he had “multiple fraudulent IDs,” a U.S. passport, a firearm and suppressor similar to what was used in the murder and a “handwritten document that speaks to both his motivation and mindset.” Officers reportedly asked Mangione if he was in New York recently, which resulted in him becoming quiet and shaking, according to a description of his arrest. A man named Larry who said he was a regular at the McDonald’s told Fox News his friend recognized Mangione and said he “looks like the shooter from New York,” but Larry thought he was kidding—“but then as it turned out, it was him.” Though his face was largely covered in most pictures law enforcement released, officials credited the images that were circulating of Mangione for him eventually being spotted and taken into custody. Pennsylvania State Police released a new photo Tuesday morning of Mangione eating what appears to be a McDonald’s hash brown with his mask down and wearing a beanie and dark coat. They are asking for help and information about Mangione’s “travel and recent whereabouts in Pennsylvania,” though Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said authorities believe Mangione had been all over the state and officials had “already identified businesses, for example, that he frequented in this area and activities that he engaged in.” A hotel clerk in Altoona told ABC News that Mangione tried to get a room at the hotel—which is about a 17-minute walk from McDonald’s—the morning he was arrested, but the hotel didn’t have any clean rooms, so Mangione, who the clerk described as “cagey, just looking around, making sure he wasn't being watched,” was turned away. What Has Luigi Mangione Been Charged With? He faces second-degree murder , gun and forgery charges in New York state. In New York, first-degree murder charges are reserved for killings with aggravated circumstances, such as those involving police officers, torture or if someone is hired to kill. Mangione was also initially charged in Pennsylvania with forgery, carrying firearms without a license, tampering with records or identification, possessing instruments of a crime and providing false identification to law enforcement. He was ordered in his arraignment Monday night to be held without bail, and has been placed in a single cell at the “maximum custody level,” Maria Bivens, press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, told CNN . The New York Times reported Tuesday afternoon that Mangione will be moved from a prison in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, to Blair County Prison, where he will wait for his New York arrest warrant to be executed. When Will Luigi Mangione Appear In Court Next? Mangione appeared in court in Pennsylvania shortly after 1:30 p.m. EST on Dec. 10 for an extradition hearing and said he would be fighting extradition. He was arraigned on the Pennsylvania charges the night of Dec. 9, and a preliminary hearing in that state is scheduled for Dec. 23. On Thursday, a judge set a hearing for 1 p.m. on Dec. 30 to address Mangione’s extradition fight and request for bail. What Do We Know About Mangione’s Prison Conditions? NewsNation conducted an interview outside of the prison Mangione is being held in on Wednesday with inmates who were watching the show on television and yelling answers out to a field reporter. Inmates can be heard yelling “Luigi’s conditions suck!” and “free Luigi!” in the interview. CBS News reported Mangione is being held in a single cell, but is not in solitary confinement. A prison official told CBS Mangione does not get to interact with other inmates, but he has not been violent and is not on suicide watch. What Has Luigi Mangione’s Lawyer Said About The Case? Thomas Dickey told reporters he had been hired to represent Mangione in this case but refused to disclose if Mangione’s family was paying to retain his services. In an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, he said he had not seen any evidence that the police have arrested the right guy in this case, adding that the New York officials requesting Mangione’s extradition will have to convince him. Dickey also disclosed that several people had emailed his staff offering to foot Mangione’s legal bills, but said while his “client appreciates the support that he has,” he “probably wouldn’t” accept the offers. In a CNN interview Wednesday , Dickey questioned the evidence police had against Mangione—specifically the ballistics and fingerprint evidence—saying those two forms of evidence have “come under some criticism in the past, relative to their credibility, their truthfulness, their accuracy.” What’s Known About Luigi Mangione's Alleged Ghost Gun? A description of Mangione’s arrest notes officers found a 3D-printed pistol and 3D-printed silencer in his backpack. The pistol was loaded with a Glock magazine containing six nine-millimeter full metal jacket rounds. A loose nine-millimeter hollow point round was also found in the backpack. Authorities have said the gun and silencer are consistent with the firearm used in the shooting of Thompson. Have Police Named A Motive? Police have not named a formal motive in the killing of Thompson—but have suggested Mangione had issues with the insurance industry. Officers found three 9mm rounds at the scene and bullet casings had the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” on them, which echo a phrase commonly used to criticize tactics insurance companies use to reject claims. At a Monday press conference, NYPD’s Kenny said a three-page handwritten manifesto found on Mangione when he was arrested is in the possession of Altoona police, but “it does seem that he has some ill will toward corporate America.” Kenny also said there were no other “specific threats” to people in the document. Citing an unnamed law enforcement official, the Associated Press reported that in the document mentioned Mangione admitted to working alone, stating: “To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone.” The note added, “I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.” What Has The Response To Luigi Mangione Been Online? There has been a flood of people supporting Mangione on social media platforms, with some offering to pay his bills and a number of GoFundMe campaigns popping up to offer financial support (though GoFundMe told Fox Business the fundraisers violated policy, were removed and donors were reimbursed). Some social media users have commented on his physical appearance and called him a hero , and accounts providing updates on Mangione have popped up on sites like X, formerly known as Twitter. On Tuesday, The Cut reported “Magione merch is everywhere” and The Washington Post reported merchandise with the words reportedly found on the bullet casings found at the scene was being sold on sites like Amazon and Etsy, though much of it was later removed. An assistant professor at Mangione’s alma mater received backlash after calling Mangione the “icon we all need and deserve” on Instagram and saying in a TikTok she had “never been prouder to be a professor” at the University of Pennsylvania, USA Today reported . The professor, Julia Alekseyeva, later apologized , but at least one lawmaker has called on the university to fire her, Fox News reported Thursday. One expert in social media told The New York Times the response supporting Mangione was “organic” as “people are legitimately actually pissed off at the health care industry, and there is some kind of support for vigilante justice.” On Wednesday, the NYPD’s deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism Rebecca Weiner said the impact of the situation is “similar to that of a domestic terror attack,” adding: “That is already being reflected in this torrent of online vitriol that we’ve been in the midst of since last Wednesday and the lionization of the alleged perpetrator of the murder as a hero.” What We Know About An Online Fundraiser For Mangione's Legal Defense An online fundraiser on GiveSendGo to cover Mangione’s legal defense costs has raised more than $45,000 as of early Thursday. The fundraiser and accompanying messages further highlight the support the alleged shooter has gained online. Several donations on GiveSendGo have been accompanied by messages from people expressing anger about the U.S. healthcare system and health insurers. One message from an anonymous donor who gave $100 read: “Luigi has shone a light on an important social issue. Healthcare insurers have been killing people for years with their policies. Why aren’t they charged with murder?” The group raising the funds identifies itself as the “December 4th Legal Committee” and it doesn’t appear to have any affiliation with Mangione. In its most recent update on Wednesday night, the fundraising group said it has written to Mangione informing him about the money raised for his legal defense and adds that if he doesn’t want the funds, it will be put “toward the defense of other political prisoners.” Was Luigi Mangione Reported Missing? Mangione’s mother, Kathleen Mangione, reported him missing to the San Francisco police last month. According to the San Francisco Standard, the missing person report was filed on Nov. 18 although it is unclear if Mangione was supposed to be present in the city when his mother filed the report. Although he was born and raised in Maryland, Kenny said he has “ties to San Francisco” and most recently resided in Honolulu. What Do We Know About Luigi Mangione’s Life At Penn? Mangione graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020 with bachelor's and master's degrees in computer and information science, according to social media accounts appearing to belong to him and the university’s alumni database. The Daily Pennsylvanian—Penn’s student newspaper— reported that Mangione founded the school’s Game Research and Development Environment club and that he was inducted into the Eta Kappa Nu honor society for excellence in electrical and computer engineering before graduating in 2020. A post on an Instagram account seeming to belong to him as well shows him affiliated with the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi. What Do We Know About Luigi Mangione’s Time At The Gilman School? Mangione attended the prestigious, all-boys K-12 Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated in 2016 as the valedictorian. The New York Times reported his valedictorian speech described his class as “coming up with new ideas and challenging the world around it.” Mangione reportedly wrestled and played soccer while he was a student there and was captain of the school’s robotics team. A number of Mangione’s former classmates from the Gilman School told CBS News he was a “nice” kid, and one former classmate told The New York Times Mangione was “a big believer in the power of technology to change the world.” The Gilman School lists its tuition for 2024-25 high school students as $37,690 and describes its mission as working to “unlock the greatness within each boy by educating the entire boy — mind, body, and spirit.” What Do We Know About Luigi Mangione’s Time In Hawaii? In Honolulu, where police said Mangione’s last known address was, he was a member of a co-working space called Hub Coworking Hawaii, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported . Mangione would reportedly come and work at the location with his roommates from a nearby co-living space called Surfbreak. On its website, Surfbreak describes itself as a “co-living and co-working community for digital nomads and remote workers.” Surfbreak founder and CEO R.J. Martin expressed shock about Mangione’s arrest and told the Honolulu Civil Beat , “I loved this guy...In some ways I feel like my members are my kids.” According to the report, other residents of the co-living space described Mangione as a “natural leader” and said he helped found a book club in the community. Martin and another resident told the outlet that they had suggested the book club should read “Industrial Society and Its Future”—a book written by Unabomber Ted Kaczynski —as “a joke.” What Did Mangione Say About The Unabomber’s Book? A Goodreads account seeming to belong to Mangione gave the book a four-star review in January. The review written by the account—which was made private on Monday—said “It's easy to quickly and thoughtless write this off as the manifesto of a lunatic, in order to avoid facing some of the uncomfortable problems it identifies. But it's simply impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions about modern society turned out.” The review also quoted another person’s take about how “violence is necessary to survive.” The New York Times reported Tuesday that Mangione told a writer in England, Gurwinder Bhogal, he disapproved of the Unabomber’s actions, but Bhogal said Mangione “was fascinated by [the Unabomber’s] ideology, and shared his concerns about rampant consumerism gradually eroding our agency and alienating us from ourselves.” Are Mangione’s Social Media Accounts Still Up? Shortly after his arrest, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X and Goodreads accounts that may have belonged to him were discovered. He also appeared to be active on Reddit, writing about back pain issues, Forbes reported . Nearly all social media accounts with reported ties to Mangione had been switched to private or taken down by platforms—with one notable exception. Mangione’s account on X was briefly taken down Monday evening, but X owner Elon Musk said it was done “without his knowledge” and he was looking into it. Shortly after, the account was reinstated. Mangione’s X account—which has a cover photo featuring an apparent spinal injury—had almost 400,000 followers as of Wednesday morning. Mangione’s X account gained a blue checkmark Tuesday. Did Luigi Mangione Have A Youtube Account? A YouTube account with Mangione’s name posted a video Monday that said “If you see this, I’m already under arrest” and had a countdown that ended by hinting at more information or videos to be released Wednesday. YouTube confirmed to Forbes the page was not associated with Mangione, though, saying “the channel’s metadata was updated following widespread reporting of Luigi Mangione’s arrest, including updates made to the channel name and handle.” YouTube added it terminated three other accounts that were linked to Mangione, but said they hadn’t been active in more than seven months. What Do We Know About Mangione’s Health Issues? Mangione’s friends in Hawaii told various news outlets that he was suffering from a serious back problem that caused him significant pain. Mangione left Hawaii to get back surgery last year and then returned to Honolulu to rent an apartment. Surfbreak’s Martin told The New York Times that Mangione said his spine was misaligned and “said his lower vertebrae were almost like a half-inch off, and I think it pinched a nerve.” Martin added that Mangione had confided to him about not being able to date people because of his back problem as “being physically intimate with his back condition wasn’t possible.” Martin told the Times he texted Mangione after his surgery asking how it had gone and got the response “long story” without further details. Although the two had promised to catch up over the phone later, Mangione eventually went “ radio silent. ” An account on Reddit that is believed to have belonged to Mangione was active in the subreddit “r/spondylolisthesis,” where people discussed the condition in which vertebrae in the spine slip out of place. “When my spondy went bad on me last year (23M) it was completely devastating as a young athletic person,” the alleged Mangione account wrote, Forbes reported. Stay safe this festive season: Why road safety is everyone's responsibilityThe perfect launch title limited by hardware. The Nintendo DS may have been an enormous success in its era, but it didn’t start that way when the system launched in November 2004. The touchscreen handheld's launch was pretty atrocious, especially compared to the generation - defining titles released on PC and console. There were just seven games available when the DS launched (including the packed-in demo for Metroid Prime Hunters) and nearly all of them were average (like Sega’s bizarre mini-game anthology Feel the Magic XY/XX ) or outright bad ( Madden NFL 2005 and Spider-Man 2 ). But one exception to the abysmal lineup was a clear winner for the DS’s earliest adopters. Super Mario 64 DS was a remake of the game that both invented and perfected the 3D platformer. And now this industry-changing Nintendo 64 launch title was now in the palm of our hands , an equally mind-blowing feat. This version would add a handful of fun gimmicks that took advantage of the console's most advanced (at least for 2004) features, some interesting changes to the game’s progression, and even new collectibles. Unfortunately, what should have been the definitive version of an already classic game was held back by one glaring flaw: the DS’s limited controls. The Nintendo DS was an impressive little handheld with almost zero games to show for it at launch. Super Mario 64 DS is the original game presented how most people remembered eight years after the fact. Graphics were smoothed over. The 2D sprites that made up most of the environmental assets like trees were now rendered in 3D. The look of Mario himself was also revised to make him look more like his GameCube model. But in a strange twist, you don’t start the game with the titular Italian plumber. Instead, players begin with Yoshi who must find a missing Mario. Mario wasn’t alone on this adventure this time. Joining him and Yoshi are other cast members hailing from the Mushroom Kingdom: Luigi and Wario. Four playable characters are a significant addition to the game as these aren’t just skin swaps. It’s an entirely new mechanic replacing an old one. In the original game, Mario could swap magic hats that turn him into metal, provide Kitty Pryde-like abilities, and throw fireballs. Here, each new character is given one of these powers, forcing players to swap between them once they’re all unlocked. Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario (for some reason) join in on rescuing Princess Peach this time around. It’s ultimately an unnecessary change. It basically complicates the simple act of collecting ability-altering power-ups. However, there was a ton of charm in seeing the four characters star in a proper Mario platformer. Each character also played a little differently from the others. Wario couldn’t jump as high but was more resilient and could bully enemies by picking them up. Luigi, faithful to his appearances in 2D Mario games, jumped higher than his brother. Yoshi’s flutter kick let him hover further than the average jump and could throw eggs after swallowing enemies. The addition of 30 new stars also gave players a reason to explore the castle further. These stars were simple compared to the more intricate ones players would collect in the original game. But more stuff to play in an already great game was nothing to be upset by. With all the new tech stuffed into the DS, there were other additions outside of the main single-player mode. Mini-games that utilized the touch screen were a mixed bag. A Where’s Waldo -type game of spotting the odd character out was a decent distraction. Others, like the one that let you pick the petals on a daisy, were unimaginatively dull . Rounding out the new content was a competitive multiplayer mode. Up to four players play as the game’s four leads who scramble for power stars across different maps. Each character of course could use their abilities to impede others’ progress or outright steal stars from them. Playing this in the schoolyard during recess was a decent enough time, but we were all more impressed that the DS could play with others wirelessly (off a single cartridge no less) than we were with the actual mode itself. The novelty of wireless, single-cart multiplayer was a big deal in 2004. Super Mario 64 DS was as decent a redux as one could hope for in 2004. It prettied up the original and added a few new twists for those who replayed the original ad nauseam. There was just one issue with this handheld port that was a deal breaker for most: the game couldn’t be played with analog controls. The original Super Mario 64 was beloved not just because it rendered the beloved world of Mario in 3D for the first time. It was lauded because of the fine control it gave players. The N64 introduced the analog stick to console gamers in 1996, and Mario’s 3D adventure was the ultimate showcase for the new dimension it provided to 3D gaming. Mario could walk, run, and even tippy-toe intuitively with the simple push of a joystick. The combination of the analog stick and Super Mario 64 was so revolutionary, that the competition would launch its own updated controller with a showcase platformer of its own the following year. On the DS, however, there was no analog stick. Mario’s fine control was missing in action. Instead, players were stuck with moving Mario with a D-Pad or the touch screen. The D-Pad option was the best of the three in my opinion. With a dedicated run button and some extra careful maneuvering, the game was playable, if not a little frustrating. Playing with the touch screen gave the player finer control, at the cost of zero tactility. Sliding your finger or stylus across a small screen was not a facsimile for an analog stick, even with the thumb strap that came with the system. Super Mario 64 DS was a great remake hamstrung by the limitations of its console, as it still lacked good analog controls. The lack of analog controls is one of the few things that the PlayStation Portable (PSP) did better than Nintendo. While it ultimately didn’t hurt the DS in the long run, as it outsold the PSP handily by the end of its run, it's a mistake Nintendo would rectify with the DS successor, and every handheld since. Unfortunately for Super Mario 64 DS, however, this hardware oversight has made it one of the most forgotten Mario games ever made. I’ve long hoped that Nintendo would acknowledge this version of their classic platformer. Even a straight port with the analog controls added back in would be an awesome way to preserve part of its history. But that’s not likely to happen anytime soon. Video Games Technology Nintendo

CHILLING cold cases around the world are finally being solved with at-home DNA tests, a forensics expert has revealed. Thanks to the kits, partnered with AI and algorithms, blood-thirsty killers are being caught at rapid rates via family members who send their DNA off to discover their ancestry or find long-lost relatives. DNA testing, otherwise known as genetic genealogy, is one of the techniques that was used to help find the accused University of Idaho quadruple homicide killer. A knife sheath found in the apartment where the killings took place in 2022 was linked to accused 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger through genetic genealogy. A trial date has still not been set in the case against him. And a notorious 27-year-old murder mystery was recently solved after an Ancestry DNA test resulted in an arrest. read more world news TikToker Jenna Rose Gerwatowski, 23, revealed in a video that a DNA test led to her grandmother's arrest in an open cold case. An actress also found a suspect in a cold case murder of teenage sweethearts using a DNA ancestry website. Even the Golden State Killer was found after genetic experts and investigators found and studied his third cousins. Then other information like genealogical records, approximate age and crime locations helped to narrow the search down to the sick murderer, his real name Joseph James DeAngelo. Most read in The Sun When you have unknown DNA at the crime scene, there's no right to privacy for that individual He terrorised the state of California for more than two decades - earning other monikers such as The Night Stalker, The Visalia Ransacker, and The East Area Rapist. Dr Ray Wickenheiser is a recent retiree from the New York State Police Crime Laboratory System where he has been incredibly active in the forensic investigative genetic genealogy department. He told The Sun that cops are moving away from the usual law enforcement databases that store DNA, and trying new routes to catch the world's most heinous criminals. At-home DNA tests have become an extremely effective way to track down those who have spent years hiding away from serving time for their crimes. Dr Wickenheiser explained how normally using law enforcement databases, cops do what is called "direct matching". This is where if somebody is in your "national DNA index" and cops also have DNA from the crime scene, they're able to "look for exactly that individual". But cases have turned cold and victims have not had justice served as an exact match is needed to find those in the police database. And Dr Wickenheiser said if it doesn't match, "well, you're pretty much done". A lot of criminals would not be in the cop's database if they're first-time offenders, nor their relatives - leading experts to publicly access information on genealogy sites. While there has been uproar in the past on how ethical the method is, Dr Wickenheiser argues that using the sites is justified as those directly involved in a crime have "no right to privacy". He said: "Genealogy is one of the biggest hobbies in the US and probably around the world. "People want to know where they came from, who their family tree is. It's just a very interesting thing. "So using essentially what's already in place for a hobby enterprise, and it's the same concept - I'm searching for a long lost relative. I have this profile that's at the crime scene. I want to find a related individual because that's a known person. "And then through building the family trees, I can figure out who this unknown person is. "So when you have unknown DNA at the crime scene, there's no right to privacy for that individual. The existing profile we put into that DNA database, we didn't get a direct match. The fact that you share that DNA with your family tree is allowing us really, frankly, to do our job "Now, what we're doing is using the existing tools of genealogy, searching for a long lost relative, and then using those known people to build a tree, to then try to get back to who could this person be, who was at the scene of the crime, do they have the right age, the right sex, the right location. "We're using existing tools, but we're applying it in a new way." There are currently two sites which, with informed consent, put forward kit users' DNA to law enforcement - GEDmatch and FamilyTreeDNA. Both sites also allow users to transfer DNA data from other sites like Ancestry, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe into their database. These can then be accessed by law enforcement who are looking to identify perpetrators of crimes. GED match website reads: "Your kit WILL be compared with kits submitted by law enforcement to identify perpetrators of violent crimes. "The operators of GEDmatch encourage everybody to select this option." AI and algorithms have created a quicker process of catching those at the scene as they map out different DNA before searching and comparing it to others on the database. Dr Wickenheiser explained: "You have search algorithms that do things that we could never do. "You can appreciate there are at this point, for different companies, a total of 40 million people worldwide who have done the same thing. "The idea is you're doing this very complex DNA comparison, but it distils down to a simple number." But Dr Wickenheiser pointed out how there are drawbacks from using AI and various algorithms to catch criminals using genealogy. He described how "so many errors" can occur and potentially catch the wrong people, like those who have been adopted into families. Dr Wickenheiser said: "Genetically there's going to be nuances, there's going to be misappropriated parentage, those things happen and people have to be able to know." While modern tech and genealogy data work hand-in-hand to solve crime - this would not be possible without experts looking over it too and comparing it with other evidence. Dr Wickenheiser said: "We're really cognisant of how big of a deal it is. The fact that every country, including England and their match rate, maybe it's 70 percent of the database. "It still means that you have 30 percent of cases where you have a perpetrator at large, you have their DNA at the crime scene and you haven't been able to find a match. "So those are the cases that we can solve with this technique. "We just want to make sure we know what's going to be scrutinized. "We just want to make sure it's done right and that people can see that it's done right. READ MORE SUN STORIES "It's those fail safes that you want to use technology. "But we have this new magical tool that using the relatedness, other pieces of DNA, other features of DNA, the fact that you share that DNA with your family tree is allowing us really, frankly, to do our job." FOUR University of Idaho students were brutally killed in November 2022. The four students identified by the police on November 14, 2022, were Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21. The students’ bodies were found near campus, in a rental house in the city of Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022. Ethan Chapin, 20 College officials report that Ethan Chapin was a freshman and member of the Sigma Chi fraternity from Conway, Washington, majoring in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism Management. He was one of a set of triplets who were also students at the University of Idaho and had spent the night before his death with both of his siblings at his sister’s sorority dance. According to social media posts, he was dating Xana Kernodle. Ethan didn’t live in the house but was staying over the night of the murder. Xana Kernodle, 20 Xana was a junior at the University of Idaho majoring in marketing at the College of Business and Economics. She was also a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Xana was allegedly the last of the four students killed in the bloody rampage, and she fought until the very end. An unnamed source told News Nation: “Xana Kernodle put up a fierce fight when the attacker set upon her, repeatedly grabbing the attacker’s knife. “So much so that she sustained deep cuts to her fingers and that her fingers were nearly severed.” Madison Mogen, 21 Madison Mogen was a senior from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, majoring in Marketing. She was the sorority’s director of PR and Marketing and was best friends with fellow victim Kaylee Goncalves. Kaylee’s father even told the public that the girls had been sharing a bed on the night of the murders. At a vigil weeks after the murders, Goncalves’ father Mr Goncalves told how the two “absolutely beautiful” young women first met in sixth grade and became inseparable. “They just found each other and every day they did homework together, they came to our house together, they shared everything,” he said at the time. “Then they started looking at colleges, they came here together. They eventually get into the same apartment together. “And in the end, they died together, in the same room, in the same bed.” Kaylee Goncalves, 21 Kaylee Goncalves was a senior pursuing a General Studies major. She was from Rathdrum, Idaho, and a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. She planned to move to Austin, Texas, in June after graduation.Trump has pressed for voting changes. GOP majorities in Congress will try to make that happen ATLANTA (AP) — Republicans in Congress plan to move quickly in their effort to overhaul the nation’s voting procedures, seeing an opportunity with control of the White House and both chambers of Congress. They want to push through long-sought changes such as voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements. They say the measures are needed to restore public confidence in elections. That's after an erosion of trust that Democrats note has been fueled by false claims from Donald Trump and his allies of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. Democrats say they are willing to work with the GOP but want any changes to make it easier, not harder, to vote. Americans are exhausted by political news. TV ratings and a new AP-NORC poll show they're tuning out NEW YORK (AP) — A lot of Americans, after an intense presidential election campaign, are looking for a break in political news. That's evident in cable television news ratings and a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The poll found nearly two-thirds of Americans saying they've found the need recently to cut down on their consumption of political and government news. That's particularly true among Democrats following President-elect Donald Trump's victory, although a significant number of Republicans and independents feel the same way. Cable networks MSNBC and CNN are really seeing a slump. That's also happened in years past for networks that particularly appeal to supporters of one candidate. Israel strikes Houthi rebels in Yemen's capital while the WHO chief says he was meters away JERUSALEM (AP) — A new round of Israeli airstrikes in Yemen have targeted the Houthi rebel-held capital of Sanaa and multiple ports. The World Health Organization’s director-general said the bombardment on Thursday took place just “meters away” as he was about to board a flight in Sanaa. He says a crew member was hurt. The strikes followed several days of Houthi attacks and launches setting off sirens in Israel. Israel's military says it attacked infrastructure used by the Houthis at the international airport in Sanaa, power stations and ports. The Israeli military didn't immediate respond to questions about the WHO chief's statement. The US says it pushed retraction of a famine warning for north Gaza. Aid groups express concern. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say they asked for — and got — the retraction of an independent monitor's warning of imminent famine in north Gaza. The internationally Famine Early Warning System Network issued the warning this week. The new report had warned that starvation deaths in north Gaza could reach famine levels as soon as next month. It cited what it called Israel's “near-total blockade” of food and water. The U.S. ambassador to Israel, Jacob Lew, criticized the finding as inaccurate and irresponsible. The U.S. Agency for International Development, which funds the famine-monitoring group, told the AP it had asked for and gotten the report's retraction. USAID officials tell The Associated Press that it had asked the group for greater review of discrepancies in some of the data. India's former prime minister Manmohan Singh, architect of economic reforms, dies aged 92 NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reform program and a landmark nuclear deal with the United States, has died. He was 92. The hospital said Singh was admitted to New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences late Thursday after his health deteriorated due to “sudden loss of consciousness at home.". He was “being treated for age-related medical conditions,” the statement added. A mild-mannered technocrat, Singh became one of India’s longest-serving prime ministers for 10 years and earned a reputation as a man of great personal integrity. But his sterling image was tainted by allegations of corruption against his ministers. What is known about a plane crash in Kazakhstan that killed 38 of 67 people on board The crash of an Azerbaijani airliner in Kazakhstan has killed 38 of 67 people on board. Azerbaijan Airlines’ Embraer 190 was en route from Azerbaijani capital Baku to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus on Wednesday when it was diverted for reasons that aren’t fully clear yet. It crashed while making an attempt to land in Aktau in Kazakhstan after flying east across the Caspian Sea. Officials in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia haven't commented on a possible cause of the crash pending an official investigation. Some commentators pointed out holes in the plane's tail section pictured after the crash as a sign that it could have been fired upon by air defense systems. Ukraine's military intelligence says North Korean troops are suffering heavy battlefield losses KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's military intelligence says North Korean troops are suffering heavy losses in Russia's Kursk region and face logistical difficulties as a result of Ukrainian attacks. The intelligence agency said Thursday that Ukrainian strikes near Novoivanovka inflicted heavy casualties on North Korean units. Ukraine's president said earlier this week that 3,000 North Korean troops have been killed and wounded in the fighting in the Kursk region. It marked the first significant estimate by Ukraine of North Korean casualties several weeks after Kyiv announced that North Korea had sent 10,000 to 12,000 troops to Russia to help it in the almost 3-year war. How the stock market defied expectations again this year, by the numbers NEW YORK (AP) — What a wonderful year 2024 has been for investors. U.S. stocks ripped higher and carried the S&P 500 to records as the economy kept growing and the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates. The benchmark index posted its first back-to-back annual gains of more than 20% since 1998. The year featured many familiar winners, such as Big Tech, which got even bigger as their stock prices kept growing. But it wasn’t just Apple, Nvidia and the like. Bitcoin and gold surged and “Roaring Kitty” reappeared to briefly reignite the meme stock craze. Holiday shoppers increased spending by 3.8% despite higher prices New data shows holiday sales rose this year even as Americans wrestled with still high prices in many grocery necessities and other financial worries. According to Mastercard SpendingPulse, holiday sales from the beginning of November through Christmas Eve climbed 3.8%, a faster pace than the 3.1% increase from a year earlier. The measure tracks all kinds of payments including cash and debit cards. This year, retailers were even more under the gun to get shoppers in to buy early and in bulk since there were five fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Mastercard SpendingPulse says the last five days of the season accounted for 10% of the spending. Sales of clothing, electronics and Jewelry rose. Why this Mexican American woman played a vital role in the US sacramental peyote trade MIRANDO CITY, Texas (AP) — Amada Cardenas, a Mexican American woman who lived in the tiny border town of Mirando City in South Texas, played an important role in the history of the peyote trade. She and her husband were the first federally licensed peyote dealers who harvested and sold the sacramental plant to followers of the Native American Church in the 1930s. After her husband's death in 1967, Cardenas continued to welcome generations of Native American Church members to her home until her death in 2005, just before her 101st birthday.

PHOENIX — A former University of Arizona football player now serving a prison sentence for murder had shocking Google searches in the days leading up to the deadly shooting. RELATED: New details in case against former Arizona Wildcats football player charged with murder Records released by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office show on Nov. 7, 2017, DaVonte' Neal repeatedly searched for information about chloroform, including the search, "What can you smell that will make someone unconscious?" and "What does chloroform smell like?" That same day, Neal also searched for shooting ranges in the Phoenix area. It's unclear what his plan entailed, but four days later, Neal shot and killed Bryan Burns, the man dating the mother of Neal's child. Burns was driving near the I-10 overpass and Elliott Road in Tempe when he was sideswiped by Neal. Neal then fired multiple shots into Burns' vehicle, striking him repeatedly. Neal fled the scene in his vehicle as witnesses rushed to help, however, Burns died from his injuries. MCSO would later learn that Burns noticed he was being followed by a vehicle unknown to him and had told his friends about it. He even relayed a license plate number to them. They relayed that information to detectives who found the license plate matched a vehicle registered to Neal's sister and mother. Dozens of hours of body camera footage and recorded interviews show MCSO's initial interactions with those close to the victim, including his girlfriend. Within minutes of speaking with detectives, she told them they needed to investigate Neal. "I wouldn't not check my child's father," she said. She then recounted strange and unusual text messages she had received from Neal the night before the shooting and in the hours after. She said Neal told her to "be careful" and the following day, he told her he had seen her friend on the news. Burns had not yet been publicly identified as the shooting victim at the time of that text message. "Back when me and my child's father both first broke up three years ago, he found out that I was talking to Bryan and it was a really big deal. He felt like his family was stolen from him," Burns' girlfriend told detectives. Neal was quickly considered an investigative lead in the case. Five days after the shooting, he was brought in by MCSO for questioning. "I'm confident in myself that I didn't do it. I know that I didn't do it. I know where I was," Neal said. Neal claimed he had been home with his child at the time of the shooting. After sitting in the interrogation room for around three hours, he asked for a lawyer. "Is there a way that we can talk about this with a lawyer or something like that?" Neal asks. Neal was let go and the investigation would continue for close to five more years. He continued to live his life. He coached at Higley High School. He then was hired as an assistant football coach at Idaho State University. The silver vehicle seen by witnesses with the license plate that matched what Burns had reported was tracked down. It had damage consistent with a sideswipe collision and the interior of the vehicle tested positive for gunshot residue. MCSO also obtained Neal's cell phone records. On the day of the murder, Neal received a suspicious text message from his aunt, advising him to get rid of something and then to delete that text message. In addition to the concerning search history leading up to the shooting, there were unusual searches in the hours following. Neal repeatedly checked local news websites for information about the shooting in Tempe. A 1,500-page incident report shows that MCSO received that cell phone data in November of 2021. They also obtained location data from Neal's phone that placed him at the scene of the crime the night it happened. In March of 2022, MCSO submitted its case to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. Two months later, he was arrested in Idaho. "Please note that criminal investigations, especially those involving serious felony charges such as murder, take time to ensure a complete and accurate case is provided to the MCAO. When the Detectives felt they had enough and the strongest case possible for the MCAO, it was submitted to them," said Sgt. Calbert Gillett of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office regarding the timeline of the case. Earlier this year, Neal pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in October and has now begun his time behind bars. His projected release date from prison is May of 2042. Prior to playing football at the University of Arizona, he played at Notre Dame. He was also an Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year at Chaparral High School. But sometimes, if you don't have confidence, if you're not in the right place, mentally, you just feel like everything harder than this.’’ So as the 16-17-1 Blueshirts embark on the rest of their season, the only question for them is whether what has gone wrong for them is fixable. With 48 games left in the season, the Rangers have time to turn things around, but how would they do that, exactly? The problems they have had that have caused this nosedive don’t show any signs of being able to correct themselves; and it’s hard to see what the coach, management or ownership could do to reverse the team’s fortunes. This season, they brought back essentially the same team — minus fourth-line center Barclay Goodrow — that won the Presidents’ Trophy last season. So did last season’s team overachieve in a huge way, or has this year’s team underachieved in a massive way? Mika Zibanejad was supposed to be the team’s No. 1 center, but he has struggled, and has been demoted in some games to the third line. Through 34 games, his six goals and 15 assists project to 14 goals and 36 assists (50 points) over a full 82-game season. Those are not first-line center numbers. Even worse, Zibanejad, who’s always been a strong two-way player, is a team-worst minus-19, tied for fourth-worst in the NHL. Plus/minus isn’t a statistic valued by the analytics community, but that’s a bad number. So is Zibanejad a good player having a bad year? Or is he a 31-year-old player entering the back nine of his career? Not that it’s all his fault, either. The defense has been poor, and other players haven’t produced what they’re expected to, either. Vincent Trocheck, who, with Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere made up one of the best lines in the league last season, is on pace for 48 points this season. He had 77 last year. Lafreniere, whose breakout season last year and fast start this year earned him a seven-year, $52.15 million contract extension, has one assist in his last eight games. Might GM Chris Drury, who’s already made two trades this month, sending captain Jacob Trouba to Anaheim and young forward Kaapo Kakko to Seattle, fire Laviolette to try and change things up? It’s probably not something Drury wants to do, but if the losing continues, might he be forced to? Sometimes it’s just not your year. And if Drury reaches that conclusion, then it may make sense for the Rangers to become sellers at the trade deadline, rather than buyers. Maybe they can get back draft picks for players like forward Reilly Smith, free-agent-to-be defensemen Ryan Lindgren and Will Borgen, and re-stock the prospect pipeline. Then they can sign Boston College forward Gabe Perreault after his college season is over, put him in the lineup at the end of the season, and just start getting ready for next year. Is it early to start thinking that way? Maybe a little. But as the great Yogi Berra once said, “It gets late early around here.’’ Colin Stephenson covers the Rangers for Newsday.
