For instance, in 2021 President Joe Biden took his oath of office on a 19th-century Bible that has been in his family since the late 1800s, while Vice President Kamala Harris swore in on two Bibles: one that belonged to former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and another that belonged to a former neighbor close to Harris, according to CNN . Former President Donald Trump also used two Bibles at his 2017 swearing-in ceremony : the Lincoln Bible used by Abraham Lincoln at his first inauguration in 1861, and a family Bible given to Trump by his mother in 1955. The Mishneh Torah used by Schiff translates into “repetition of the Torah” or “the second Torah” in English. It was printed in Italy in 1490, according to his office. Schiff, a pro-Israel Democrat, has been open about his Jewish heritage and faith and has strongly condemned antisemitism. “Growing up in a Jewish household with strong ties to the Jewish community, I learned to revere a passage from Micah — that instructs us to do justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God,” Schiff previously said, according to the Jewish Democratic Council of America’s website . “I am very proud of my Jewish heritage, our traditions and values and the work our community does to build a more just and equitable world for the next generation.” In his swearing-in statement, Schiff said he will be a “tireless advocate for Californians in every part of the state and work across the aisle to deliver on day one.” Schiff, who represented an LA-area district in Congress for nearly 24 years, will complete the remainder of the late Sen. In 2024, the first full year the district has been supported by the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, the nonprofit introduced new events and expanded its budget, which is continuing to grow. “With roughly $60,000 in our operating budget, I strive to produce events and promotions that either raise money or pay for themselves to make sure we have a robust calendar of activity in our downtown,” Sarah Tipple, director of the district, said at a presentation to the City Council on Dec. 16. The district, which produces the May Madness hot-rod car show, the Hops and Vine Stroll, the Holiday of Lights and Winter Wonderland and more, added new programs such as the Chinese New Year dragon hunt, Pride Month window paintings, Juneteenth activities and a Dancing Under the Lights event, which is an evolution of the previous Dining Under the Lights program. Tipple said programs are designed to add vibrancy, art and community. “I’m hoping that these first annuals become staples in our downtown schedule of promotions for years to come,” Tipple said. At the meeting, the City Council voted unanimously to support the district’s recommendation to renew annual assessments it collects from businesses on the the Fourth Street corridor from Lincoln Avenue to the West End neighborhood. The assessments range from $25 for a personal service practitioner, like a salon in the West End, up to $425 for a financial institution on the main drag. For 2024, the city has collected $63,525 in assessment revenue, lower than the pre-pandemic average of $83,000, indicating that some payments are delinquent or unpaid, or there are empty storefronts. In 2023, the pandemic-strained business improvement district was thrown a lifeline because it faced a potential third year of revenue losses. The City Council voted unanimously to approve a two-year contract with the Chamber of Commerce to help re-energize the district. This year, district events netted about a $22,000 profit for the district. After expenses, the district is expected to close the year with a total profit of more than $2,000. Next year, the district’s total revenues are projected to increase about $23,000 to more than $135,000. The events and marketing budget is expected to jump about $10,000 to more than $62,000, and the operating budget is expected to increase about $5,000 to more than $71,000, according to a financial report presented to the city. Tipple said the addition of a part-time social media marketing manager last year continues to drive new online traffic to the district, its events and businesses. She said participatory events such as scavenger hunts encourage shoppers to go into stores. For the next year, the district is working on several initiatives to spruce up the downtown, including a public art plan with the Downtown San Rafael Arts District and city staff; a mulching project on landscaped areas; and power washing, graffiti removal and storefront improvements. The 2025 plan also includes a concerted effort to fill vacancies and put art on vacant storefronts. Other targets for the year include growing the Thursday night summer farmers market and supporting cultural diversity through celebrations for Lunar New Year, Pride Month and Dia de los Muertos. Karen Strolia, chief executive officer of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, thanked the city for its support and credited the success of the partnership and the planned growth to Tipple’s leadership. “Sarah is a force to be reckoned with: She has a vision for this community, she’s extremely passionate, she shows up, blood, sweat and tears with high energy, to make sure our downtown district is well and happy and healthy and thriving,” Strolia said. Rupert Murdoch's audacious bid to cement his eldest son's control over one of the world's most influential media empires has failed, a US report said Monday. The first family of news -- commanding a stable that includes Fox News, The Wall Street Journal and a host of British and Australian media -- had been the inspiration for the hit TV series "Succession." Like the fictional version, this real-life fight pitted the children of a powerful patriarch against each other for who should be the face and the voice of the empire after the old man dies. Murdoch, now 93, had long intended that his children inherit the empire, and jointly decide its direction. The eldest daughter, Prudence, has had little involvement in the family business, but at various times the other three -- Lachlan, James and Elisabeth -- have all been considered as successors. But in recent years Murdoch senior had reportedly grown concerned that Fox News -- the crown jewels of the collection -- might drift away from its lucrative right-wing moorings after his death, to reflect the more centrist views of James and Elisabeth. He had therefore sought to designate Lachlan -- who currently heads Fox News and News Corp -- as the controlling player in the wider business. That had required rewriting the terms of an irrevocable trust that passed power to the four siblings jointly, stripping three of them of voting power, while allowing them to continue to benefit financially. Rupert Murdoch had argued that giving control to Lachlan -- who is understood to share his father's worldview -- was in the financial interests of the whole brood. The family intrigue played out behind closed doors in a Nevada courtroom, where Murdoch senior and his four children were understood to have given several days' evidence in September. In a decision filed at the weekend, probate commissioner Edmund J. Gorman Jr. said the father and son had acted in "bad faith" in trying to rewrite the rules, The New York Times reported, citing a copy of the sealed court document. The plan to alter the trust's structure was a "carefully crafted charade" to "permanently cement Lachlan Murdoch's executive roles." "The effort was an attempt to stack the deck in Lachlan Murdoch's favor after Rupert Murdoch's passing so that his succession would be immutable," the Times cited the ruling as saying. "The play might have worked; but an evidentiary hearing, like a showdown in a game of poker, is where gamesmanship collides with the facts and at its conclusion, all the bluffs are called and the cards lie face up. "The court, after considering the facts of this case in the light of the law, sees the cards for what they are and concludes this raw deal will not, over the signature of this probate commissioner, prevail." Murdoch's lawyer, Adam Streisand, did not immediately reply to an AFP request for comment. The ruling is not final, and must now be ratified or rejected by a district judge. That ruling could be challenged, perhaps provoking another round of legal arguments. The complicated structure of the irrevocable trust reflects the colourful familial relationships that shaped Rupert Murdoch's life as he built the multibillion-dollar empire. The trust was reported to have been the result of a deal agreed with his second wife -- mother of Lachlan, Elisabeth and James -- who wanted to ensure her offspring would not be disenfranchised by children Murdoch had with his third wife, Wendi Deng. By CHRIS MEGERIAN and COLLEEN LONG WASHINGTON (AP) — In the two weeks since Donald Trump won the presidency, he’s tried to demonstrate his dominance by naming loyalists for top administration positions, even though many lack expertise and some face sexual misconduct accusations. It often seems like he’s daring Congress to oppose his decisions. But on Thursday, Trump’s attempt to act with impunity showed a crack as Matt Gaetz , his choice for attorney general, withdrew from consideration. Trump had named Gaetz, a Florida congressman, to be the country’s top law enforcement official even though he was widely disliked by his colleagues, has little legal experience and was accused of having sex with an underage girl, an allegation he denied. After being plagued by investigations during his first presidency, Trump wanted a devoted ally in charge of the Justice Department during his second. However, it was never obvious that Gaetz could win enough support from lawmakers to get confirmed as attorney general. Trump chose for a replacement Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general who defended him during his first impeachment trial and supported his false claims of voter fraud. Now the question is whether Gaetz was uniquely unpalatable, or if Trump’s other picks might exceed his party’s willingness to overlook concerns that would have sunk nominees in a prior political era. The next test will likely be Pete Hegseth, who Trump wants to lead the Pentagon despite an allegation of sexual assault that he’s denied. So far, Republicans are rallying around Hegseth , an Army veteran and former Fox News host. Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican who serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the controversy over Gaetz would have little bearing on Trump’s other choices. He said they would be considered “one at a time.” Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, suggested otherwise, claiming “the dominoes are falling.” “The drip drip of evidence and truth is going to eventually doom some others,” he said. Trump’s election victory was a sign that there may not be many red lines left in American politics. He won the presidential race despite authoritarian, racist and misogynist rhetoric, not to mention years of lies about election fraud and his role in sparking the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He was also criminally convicted of falsifying business records to pay hush money, and he was found liable for sexual abuse in a civil case. Empowered by voters who looked past his misconduct and saw him as a powerful agent of change, Trump has shown no deference to Washington norms while working to fill his second administration . The transition team hasn’t pursued federal background checks for Trump’s personnel choices. While some of his selections have extensive experience in the areas they’ve been chosen to lead, others are personal friends and Fox News personalities who have impressed and flattered Trump over the years. Several have faced allegations involving sexual misconduct . Hegseth is facing the most scrutiny after Gaetz. Once Trump announced Hegseth as his nominee for Pentagon chief, allegations emerged that he sexually assaulted a woman in California in 2017. The woman said he took her phone, blocked the door to the hotel room and refused to let her leave, according to a police report made public this week. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and denied any wrongdoing, the report said. However, he paid the woman a confidential settlement in 2023. Hegseth’s lawyer said the payment was made to head off the threat of a baseless lawsuit. Trump’s choice for secretary of health and human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has faced allegations of misconduct too. A woman who babysat for him and his second wife told Vanity Fair magazine that Kennedy groped her in the late 1990s, when she was 23. Kennedy did not deny the allegation and texted an apology to the woman after the article was published. That isn’t the only hurdle for Kennedy; he’s spent years spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories about vaccines, raising fears about making him a top health official in the new administration. Linda McMahon, chosen by Trump to be education secretary, is fighting a lawsuit connected to her former company, World Wrestling Entertainment. She’s accused of knowingly enabling sexual exploitation of children by an employee as early as the 1980s, and she denies the allegations. Tulsi Gabbard is another person who could face a difficult confirmation battle, but for very different reasons. The former Democratic representative from Hawaii has been a vocal Trump ally, and he chose her to be national intelligence director. But there’s grave concern by lawmakers and national security officials over Gabbard’s history of echoing Russian propaganda. Critics said she would endanger relationships with U.S. allies. Gaetz was investigated by federal law enforcement for sex trafficking, but the case was closed without charges and Republicans have blocked the release of a related report from the House Ethics Committee. However, some allegations leaked out, including that Gaetz paid women for sex. One of the women testified to the committee that she saw Gaetz having sex with a 17-year-old girl, according to a lawyer for the woman. As Gaetz met with senators this week, it became clear that he would face stubborn resistance from lawmakers who were concerned about his behavior and believed he was unqualified to run the Justice Department. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction,” Gaetz wrote on social media when announcing his withdrawal. Sen. Mike Braun, an Indiana Republican, said he believed there were four to six members of the caucus who would have voted against Gaetz, likely dooming his nomination, and “the math got too hard.” He said some of the issues and allegations around Gaetz were “maybe beyond the pale.” “I think there were just too many things, it was like a leaky dike, and you know, it broke,” Braun said. Trump thanked Gaetz in a post on Truth Social, his social media website, without addressing the substance of the allegations against him. “He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect,” Trump wrote. Growing up in a house on the edge of Yowie Bay during World War ll, Elaine Gilchrist feared she would be the cause of the Australian Army surrendering to the Japanese. or signup to continue reading Elaine's chores as a six-year-old was shaking the crumbs off the family's white tablecloth out the window of the small kitchen after dinner each night. She was never sure if the Japanese had come into Yowie Bay in their submarines and were just waiting for the signal of the white flapping flag. Sydney residents lived with extreme fear after three Japanese midget submarines entered Sydney Harbour on the night of May 31- June 1 1942 and attempted to sink Allied warships. Elaine's personal terror was among wartime memories she shared with her daughter Frances McInnes for an article in the Sutherland Shire History Association Bulletin. Elaine now lives at John Paul Village (St Vincent's Care) in Heathcote. Born in 1935, Elaine Gilchrist (nee Saunders) was among grandchildren descended from Frederick Jesson Corbett, who ran a poultry farm in Willarong Road North, Caringbah in the 1890s. During the war years Elaine and her brother Arthur lived with their mother Freda Saunders in a rented cottage called Carinya in Matson Crescent, Yowie Bay. Her father Stewart had enlisted in the Australian Army Canteen Services as a Technical Storeman in June 1940. Elaine recalled a simple and easy life in the house, which was surrounded by bushland. Numerous snakes were the only drawback. The family didn't have a lot, but were happy and safe. At high tide, Elaine would climb out of her bedroom window, jumping straight into the water. Fishing rods were occasionally hung from various windows. She remembers the boats being taken up the river to Audley, including their own small rowboat. This was to prevent the Japanese making use of them if they landed in our area. Elaine has fond memories of the billycans full of milk, the ice cart deliveries and being given free chunks of ice to suck on. She recalls bread and dripping sandwiches, card games and local identity Bill Lawes, who was known as Tarzan because of the calls he made as he made deliveries by boat around the bay. Walking with her mother and brother through the bush (where the Camellia Gardens are now), up to the dirt road of President Avenue and on to Caringbah was a regular trip. President Avenue stopped at bushland just after Kareena Rd heading west, and then started again at Kiora Road, the other side of the tract of bush. All the southern side of President Avenue heading up to Caringbah was bushland and grassy paddocks and at the top of President Avenue was an old timber hall (present site of Caringbah Inn). Elaine and Arthur attended were pupils at Miranda Public School, and walked along a bush track and past an old quarry before reaching Karimbla Rd and Miranda Railway Station. Elaine started school in 1941 when the school was originally situated on the eastern corner of Kingsway and Kiora Road, next to St Luke's Church of England. At that time Miranda had very few shops. There was a large co-op in what is now Jackson Avenue opposite the school, and an old tram shed still stood on the school grounds. Opposite the school on the Kingsway heading west was Billy Macs Butcher, a milk bar and ice cream shop and a paper shop interspersed with grassy paddocks. On the north-western corner of Kingsway and Kiora Road was the large Penprase general store, supplying everything that a farmer or housekeeper would need. Scattered along Kingsway on the northern side were various small shops, including a cake shop, dentist and haberdashery shop for all our sewing and knitting needs. There were no shops on the southern side of Kingsway where Westfield Miranda is now located. Opposite the school in Kiora Road was the 'new' School of Arts. The original School of Arts had been at the northern end of Kiora Road in the 1920s. Elaine's memories of school were wearing whatever clothes they owned. Many of the boys didn't wear any shoes, but would find some, as well as a tie, for the annual school photo. Air raid shelters were built in the playground, and Elaine remembers doing drills, marching up and down and a thick rubber tube/bar they had to place in their mouths, apparently to bite down on if they were scared. Elaine married Ronald Gilchrist at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Caringbah in 1955, and they brought up five children in Ultimo Street, Caringbah. She was heavily involved in the Brownies and Girl Guides, being a Brownie leader from 1965, then starting up 3rd Caringbah Guides in the early 1970s. How do you assess these changes, and do you see them as diverging from the original vision for NU? NU was conceived as a model of excellence , designed to meet international standards in research, teaching, and governance. One of its founding principles was merit-based admission , which ensured that students were selected solely based on their ability and potential. This meritocratic foundation was not only an academic principle but a reflection of NU's mission to transform Kazakhstan's education system. Students, alumni, faculty and staff have worked hard to build NU's name. Now students, alumni and parents are rightly concerned that the lowering of admission standards undermines this mission and risks eroding the university's reputation both domestically and internationally. Such changes create the perception that NU is moving away from its original vision of being a world-class institution. To restore confidence, NU must reaffirm its commitment to international standards, transparency, and academic rigor. Reverting to merit-based admissions and prioritizing excellence will send a clear message that the institution remains steadfast in its mission. In the Open Letter, I stated that in theory, a policy of opening the entry door wider, but then be resolutely strict in terms of progression and graduation based on academic integrity and merit could work. There are some cases globally. However, it can only work if there is a full commitment to integrity and merit, openness and transparency, and NU's original values are upheld. But unfortunately, what I have observed and heard about recent developments at NU does not make me optimistic. While administration is supposedly in a belt-tightening mode, new senior positions were created and filled with scant regard for a proper hiring process and qualification. Conflict of interest and restrictions on hiring family members have been discarded. These are just a few of the institutional changes that will inevitably bleed over into the academic fabric as well. Is this the example that senior management wants to present to our students? - Do you believe the current situation, where the financial foundations like the Social Development Fund and New Generation Foundation were mismanaged, reflects a broader crisis within Kazakhstan's governance and democracy? Absolutely, but to be fair, this corporate governance crisis is not just limited to Kazakhstan . The findings of the internal audit conducted by NU on the Social Development Fund (SDF) reveal a systemic absence of check and balances and accountability that extends beyond these institutions. Mismanagement and theft, such as those involving Aslan Sarinzhipov , have not only undermined NU and NIS but also shaken public trust in Kazakhstan's leadership. The financial institutions linked to NU and NIS—Nazarbayev Fund, New Generation Foundation, and Jusan Group — were designed to guarantee long-term financial stability for education in Kazakhstan , securing the futures of NU and NIS for decades. However, NGF and Jusan Group's systematic depletion and dismantling highlight the country's struggle with accountability and the need for deep structural reform. These entities were carefully designed to ensure that Kazakhstan's leading educational institutions could eventually operate in a manner less affected by state budget fluctuations. However, as the audits reveal, these institutions have been systematically mismanaged and looted, jeopardizing the financial future of NU and NIS. What is your opinion on this, and how should the university address governance and corruption issues? I have not had the opportunity to access the state audit report, thus it is difficult to comment. If the cited amount in mismanagement of 73.5 billion tenge over six years is true, it is scandalous. However, we do not know what the auditors' definition and criteria of mismanagement is. So, let's first find out what the report actually says. What is clear, however, is the outcome of a 2023 internal audit of NU's Social Development Fund (SDF) , and it is sobering. This SDF audit reveals a blatant disregard of corporate governance principles, where individuals entrusted with university resources prioritized personal gain over the mission of NU. The audit revealed that SDF management led by current NU Executive Vice President Aslan Sarinzhipov constructed an intricate web of subsidiary entities, including abroad, to systematically evade the oversight and control of the University. Funds ( over 14 billion tenge ) meant to assist students and faculty were used for personal gains of Aslan Sarinzhipov and questionable deals. Unfortunately, NU senior officials such as Vice President Kadisha Dairova participated in such schemes. When I voiced my concern earlier over the developments at NU, it is largely because of the track record of senior officials there. For NU to move forward, it must adopt zero-tolerance policies for corruption, demand accountability from those responsible, and reform its governance structures to ensure transparency. - Why do some claim there is a lack of funds for NU and NIS, despite the promises of financial stability from their endowment funds? The claim of a lack of funds is a direct consequence of the systematic looting of resources from the New Generation Foundation and Jusan Group. These entities were explicitly designed to contribute to NU and NIS' long-term financial sustainability against the backdrop of reduced state funding. However, as I described in my Open Letter, these innovative financial structures have been undermined by mismanagement, and outright theft. However, one should not forget that universities, in particular research universities, are a long-term endeavor. They are meant to educate and develop generations upon generations of leaders and professionals in a broad range of sectors, and thus contribute to the scientific, economic, and societal wealth of countries. Building a strong institution that can meet the test of time requires long-term and unwavering commitments to foundational values such as integrity, meritocracy, excellence, openness and transparency. This overall construct allowed us to recruit world-class faculty, develop state-of-the-art facilities, and provide scholarships to talented students, many from underprivileged backgrounds.
