Geordie Shore star Charlotte Crosby said she has been admitted to hospital but her baby is “all fine” after masked men attempted to rob her home this week. Her fiance Jake Ankers announced on social media that a group of men carrying a machete entered their home on Thursday evening while they were in the house with their two-year-old daughter. Crosby , who is nearly eight months pregnant, thanked those who have sent their support to the couple in an Instagram Story post on Saturday. The reality TV star, 34, wrote: “I’m typing this I’m laid in hospital. Baby is all fine, thank you for all the messages!” She added: “This month has had misfortune after misfortune. I want to thank you all for your kind messages about the break-in the other night. “Still something I’m really struggling to come to terms with.” Ankers also posted a photo of Crosby lying in a hospital bed to his Instagram Story, saying she had been “rushed in to hospital” as the TV star had been experiencing “serious pains in her stomach”. The businessman thanked their followers for reaching out and their local community for being “fantastic” since the burglary attempt. Ankers, who appeared with the reality star on BBC Three reality show Charlotte In Sunderland , previously said the thieves “tried to rob my house with my two-year-old and my partner who is nearly eight months pregnant, armed with a machete”. He said one of the four men “had a red balaclava on” and was carrying the weapon at the top of the stairs. Durham Constabulary were alerted at 7pm on Thursday to reports of an aggravated burglary in Houghton-le-Spring, a town in the Sunderland area. A spokeswoman for the force said: “Officers attended the area however the suspects left the scene before their arrival. “Nobody was injured in the incident and no items are believed to have been taken.” She added that an investigation is under way and anyone with information is asked to contact police. Crosby is best known for appearing in the MTV reality series Geordie Shore and winning the 12th series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2013. By KENYA HUNTER, Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — As she checked into a recent flight to Mexico for vacation, Teja Smith chuckled at the idea of joining another Women’s March on Washington . As a Black woman, she just couldn’t see herself helping to replicate the largest act of resistance against then-President Donald Trump’s first term in January 2017. Even in an election this year where Trump questioned his opponent’s race , held rallies featuring racist insults and falsely claimed Black migrants in Ohio were eating residents’ pets , he didn’t just win a second term. He became the first Republican in two decades to clinch the popular vote, although by a small margin. “It’s like the people have spoken and this is what America looks like,” said Smith, the Los Angeles-based founder of the advocacy social media agency, Get Social. “And there’s not too much more fighting that you’re going to be able to do without losing your own sanity.” After Trump was declared the winner over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris , many politically engaged Black women said they were so dismayed by the outcome that they were reassessing — but not completely abandoning — their enthusiasm for electoral politics and movement organizing. Black women often carry much of the work of getting out the vote in their communities. They had vigorously supported the historic candidacy of Harris, who would have been the first woman of Black and South Asian descent to win the presidency. Harris’ loss spurred a wave of Black women across social media resolving to prioritize themselves, before giving so much to a country that over and over has shown its indifference to their concerns. AP VoteCast , a survey of more than 120,000 voters, found that 6 in 10 Black women said the future of democracy in the United States was the single most important factor for their vote this year, a higher share than for other demographic groups. But now, with Trump set to return to office in two months, some Black women are renewing calls to emphasize rest, focus on mental health and become more selective about what fight they lend their organizing power to. “America is going to have to save herself,” said LaTosha Brown, the co-founder of the national voting rights group Black Voters Matter. She compared Black women’s presence in social justice movements as “core strategists and core organizers” to the North Star, known as the most consistent and dependable star in the galaxy because of its seemingly fixed position in the sky. People can rely on Black women to lead change, Brown said, but the next four years will look different. “That’s not a herculean task that’s for us. We don’t want that title. ... I have no goals to be a martyr for a nation that cares nothing about me,” she said. AP VoteCast paints a clear picture of Black women’s concerns. Black female voters were most likely to say that democracy was the single most important factor for their vote, compared to other motivators such as high prices or abortion. More than 7 in 10 Black female voters said they were “very concerned” that electing Trump would lead the nation toward authoritarianism, while only about 2 in 10 said this about Harris. About 9 in 10 Black female voters supported Harris in 2024, according to AP VoteCast, similar to the share that backed Democrat Joe Biden in 2020. Trump received support from more than half of white voters, who made up the vast majority of his coalition in both years. Like voters overall, Black women were most likely to say the economy and jobs were the most important issues facing the country, with about one-third saying that. But they were more likely than many other groups to say that abortion and racism were the top issues, and much less likely than other groups to say immigration was the top issue. Despite those concerns, which were well-voiced by Black women throughout the campaign, increased support from young men of color and white women helped expand Trump’s lead and secured his victory. Politically engaged Black women said they don’t plan to continue positioning themselves in the vertebrae of the “backbone” of America’s democracy. The growing movement prompting Black women to withdraw is a shift from history, where they are often present and at the forefront of political and social change. One of the earliest examples is the women’s suffrage movement that led to ratification in 1920 of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution , which gave women the right to vote. Black women, however, were prevented from voting for decades afterward because of Jim Crow-era literacy tests, poll taxes and laws that blocked the grandchildren of slaves from voting. Most Black women couldn’t vote until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Black women were among the organizers and counted among the marchers brutalized on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama, during the historic march in 1965 from Selma to Montgomery that preceded federal legislation. Decades later, Black women were prominent organizers of the Black Lives Matter movement in response to the deaths of Black Americans at the hands of police and vigilantes. In his 2024 campaign, Trump called for leveraging federal money to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs in government programs and discussions of race, gender or sexual orientation in schools. His rhetoric on immigration, including false claims that Black Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating cats and dogs, drove support for his plan to deport millions of people . Tenita Taylor, a Black resident of Atlanta who supported Trump this year, said she was initially excited about Harris’ candidacy. But after thinking about how high her grocery bills have been, she feels that voting for Trump in hopes of finally getting lower prices was a form of self-prioritization. “People say, ‘Well, that’s selfish, it was gonna be better for the greater good,”’ she said. “I’m a mother of five kids. ... The things that (Democrats) do either affect the rich or the poor.” Some of Trump’s plans affect people in Olivia Gordon’s immediate community, which is why she struggled to get behind the “Black women rest” wave. Gordon, a New York-based lawyer who supported the Party for Socialism and Liberation’s presidential nominee, Claudia de la Cruz, worries about who may be left behind if the 92% of Black women voters who backed Harris simply stopped advocating. “We’re talking millions of Black women here. If millions of Black women take a step back, it absolutely leaves holes, but for other Black women,” she said. “I think we sometimes are in the bubble of if it’s not in your immediate circle, maybe it doesn’t apply to you. And I truly implore people to understand that it does.” Nicole Lewis, an Alabama-based therapist who specializes in treating Black women’s stress, said she’s aware that Black women withdrawing from social impact movements could have a fallout. But she also hopes that it forces a reckoning for the nation to understand the consequences of not standing in solidarity with Black women. “It could impact things negatively because there isn’t that voice from the most empathetic group,” she said. “I also think it’s going to give other groups an opportunity to step up. ... My hope is that they do show up for themselves and everyone else.” Brown said a reckoning might be exactly what the country needs, but it’s a reckoning for everyone else. Black women, she said, did their job when they supported Harris in droves in hopes they could thwart the massive changes expected under Trump. “This ain’t our reckoning,” she said. “I don’t feel no guilt.” AP polling editor Amelia Thomson DeVeaux and Associated Press writer Linley Sanders in Washington contributed to this report. (AP) — Getting blown out at Green Bay following another squandered late lead the previous week against Seattle has quickly turned the San Francisco 49ers from a Super Bowl contender into a team just fighting to get back to the playoffs. If San Francisco doesn’t get healthy and eliminate the errors that led to Sunday’s 38-10 loss to the Packers, the focus will turn from playoff permutations to what offseason changes are necessary. “I think everyone understands completely outside and inside what the situation is,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “That’s why the Seattle game was so tough of a loss and that’s why last night was even worse. We know what we got ahead of us. We know exactly what the playoff situation is. That is what it is. But really, all that matters is this week when you do need to go on a run and put a lot of wins to even think of that.” The task doesn’t get any easier as the Niners (5-6) get set to play at Buffalo on Sunday night. The 49ers are hoping to get injured stars Brock Purdy, Nick Bosa and Trent Williams back for that game, but their presence alone won’t fix everything that went wrong on Sunday. The defense got repeatedly gashed early and put San Francisco in a 17-0 hole before the offense even generated a first down. The running game never got going as Christian McCaffrey has looked nothing like the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year in his three games back from Achilles tendinitis. And whenever the Niners appeared to do something right, a penalty came back to haunt them. It added up to the most lopsided loss for San Francisco since the 2018 season, before Shanahan had turned the Niners into perennial contenders. “It’s probably one of the worst ones I’ve been a part of,” linebacker Fred Warner said. “It is embarrassing. You’ve got to take it on the chin, take it like a man and move on.” Despite the doom and gloom, the 49ers are only one game behind Seattle and Arizona in the NFC West standings with six games to go. But San Francisco already has three division losses and a difficult schedule featuring games against the Bills this week and Detroit in Week 17. “My optimism is not broken by any means,” tight end George Kittle said. “We still have a lot of very talented players. We will get some guys back and I still have full trust in the coaching staff to put our guys in position to make plays. I have no worry about that. But definitely an uphill grind. We’ll see what we’re made of, which I’m looking forward to.” What’s working Red-zone passes to Kittle. Backup QB Brandon Allen connected on a 3-yard TD pass to Kittle late in the second quarter for San Francisco’s only TD. Kittle leads the NFL with eight touchdown catches in the red zone, which is tied with Vernon Davis (2013) for the most in a season for a Niners player since 2000. Kittle was the only consistent part of the San Francisco offense with six catches for 82 yards. What needs help Avoiding penalties. San Francisco had nine penalties for 77 yards and they were costly and sloppy. The Niners had 12 men on the field on defense on back-to-back plays, three false starts, a pass interference in the end zone and three penalties on special teams, including a holding on Eric Saubert that negated an 87-yard kickoff return by Deebo Samuel to open the second half. Rookie Dominick Puni had three penalties after being penalized just once in the first 10 games. Stock up DE Leonard Floyd. There were few positive performances on defense, but Floyd had both of the team’s sacks. Stock down Run defense. San Francisco allowed 169 yards rushing, including 87 in the first quarter for the team’s second-worst performance in the opening quarter since 1991. The Niners missed 19 tackles, according to Pro Football Focus, as Josh Jacobs gained 83 of his 106 yards rushing after contact. Injuries Purdy took part in a light throwing session without pain on Monday and Shanahan is hopeful he can return to practice Wednesday after missing the Green Bay game with a shoulder injury. ... Bosa (hip, oblique) and Williams (ankle) also could return this week after sitting out Sunday. ... LG Aaron Banks, DT Jordan Elliott and WR Jacob Cowing all in the concussion protocol. ... RG Dominick Puni (shoulder) and CB Deommodore Lenoir (knee) underwent MRIs on Monday and the team is waiting for results. ... CB Renardo Green (neck) and LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (knee) are day to day. Key number Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 11 — The Niners generated only 11 first downs, tied for the fewest in any game in eight seasons under Shanahan. They also had 11 in the 2022 NFC title game loss at Philadelphia when Purdy hurt his elbow and in Week 2 against Seattle in Shanahan’s first season in 2017. LAHAINA, Hawaii — It was Maui magic. An instant classic. But at the end of 45 back-and-forth minutes — which featured an 18-5 UConn run to end regulation; a buzzer-beating 3 by Solo Ball to force overtime; offsetting technical fouls due to a shoving match in overtime; a technical foul on Huskies coach Dan Hurley for calling officials a “f—ing joke”; Memphis making seven of its last eight free throws, six by PJ Carter ; and UConn airballing its desperation 3-point heave as time expired — Memphis outlasted No. 2 UConn 99-97 to snap the longest winning streak in Division I at 17 games, dealing the two-time defending national champs their first loss since Feb. 20. Advertisement And that was all before lunchtime locally. Turns out the Maui Invitational did miss the Lahaina Civic Center. The tournament’s triumphant return to its longtime home , after moving to Honolulu last year in the wake of the August 2023 wildfires, more than delivered. Tyrese Hunter led Memphis with 26 points, tying a career high with seven 3-pointers, but Carter was the late star, saving Memphis by canning all six of his overtime free throws after Hurley’s late technical. Ball, whose 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left in regulation capped a frantic UConn comeback attempt, finished with 10 points but fouled out in overtime, one of three Huskies who ended the game stuck to the pine. Tarris Reed Jr. , who set a new season high with 22 points, led UConn in scoring, while Alex Karaban ’s four 3-pointers were critical to the game even making it past regulation. When Hunter hit his seventh 3 with 8:35 left, putting Memphis up 10, it seemed like the Huskies would lose their first nonconference game since last season’s epic against Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse. But the Huskies never withered, with Karaban and Liam McNeeley ’s 3-point shooting pulling them back into it. Memphis, meanwhile, didn’t make a field goal over the final four minutes of regulation. And as if this game needed any more theatrics, the reason UConn got one last look to send the game to extra time? Because Memphis was called for a 10-second violation with 14.2 seconds left, setting up Ball’s big-time 3. In overtime, both teams traded baskets to start, but hoops eventually gave way to hysteria when Memphis bigs Moussa Cisse and Dain Dainja got into an altercation with UConn big Samson Johnson , bringing both benches to the brink of clearing. Even Hurley and Hardaway got involved, with Memphis assistant Nolan Smith trying to play peacemaker. Eventually Dainja and Samson were both assessed technical fouls, but it was Samson’s fifth, leaving UConn without a viable big man for the game’s final few minutes. Meanwhile, Memphis star PJ Haggerty — who finished with 22 points, 11 of which came at the free-throw line — had fouled out in the final 30 seconds of regulation trying to go for a game-sealing defensive rebound. Advertisement But the deciding factor Monday afternoon was when Hurley, whose bench was assessed an early technical for complaining to officials after UConn picked up six personal fouls in the game’s first five minutes, blew his top with 40 seconds left after McNeeley was called for an over-the-back foul trying to grab an offensive rebound. Hurley had to be restrained by assistant Kimani Young, but the damage was done. UConn coach Dan Hurley goes ballistic on the refs after a controversial over-the-back call in OT. Hurley gets T'd up. Huskies go on to lose the game by 2. pic.twitter.com/aBVIjqYp7A — Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) November 25, 2024 “That was a joke,” Hurley said. “I mean, I just watched it ... I had a lot of issues with what went on in the game ... For that call to be made at that point in the game is a complete joke.” His technical gave Memphis two more shots in addition to the two it earned from McNeeley’s foul. Carter sank all four, giving Memphis the margin it ultimately needed to ride out the rest of the game. Memphis will now play the winner of Michigan State and Colorado in the semifinals on Tuesday, while UConn will take on the loser in the consolation bracket. (Photo: Darryl Oumi / Getty Images)

Rethinking government

As Canadians approach their golden years, many start taking a closer look at their savings. For those aged 65 and older, the average Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) balance is around $129,000, while the average Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) balance is about $41,000. Combined, these accounts offer a total of approximately $170,000 in savings. While this may sound like a decent sum, it often pales compared to what’s needed for a comfortable retirement. Financial experts suggest retirees should aim for $500,000 to $1 million in savings to maintain their lifestyle, especially with rising costs of living and healthcare. So, how do you catch up? Closing the gap This gap between savings and retirement needs is a growing concern. Retirement income from government benefits like the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) can help. But these alone rarely provide enough to support a comfortable life. For Canadians hoping to bridge this gap, investing wisely becomes critical. One option that’s been catching attention is ( ), a company with a strong history of performance and a promising outlook. Fairfax Financial is a Toronto-based holding company with a focus on property and casualty insurance, reinsurance, and investment management. Known for its disciplined investment strategy under the leadership of Prem Watsa, Fairfax has a reputation for delivering solid returns. In the third quarter of 2024, FFH reported net earnings of $1.03 billion. A significant increase attributed to strong adjusted operating income and net gains on investments. The book value per basic share also rose to $1.033 billion, an 11.7% jump from the prior year-end, reflecting the company’s strong financial foundation. Performance Looking at past performance, Fairfax stock has been a consistent performer. In 2023, the company posted net earnings of $4.38 billion, up from $3.37 billion in 2022. This steady growth highlights Fairfax stock’s ability to navigate changing market conditions while continuing to create shareholder value. It’s not just about the numbers, either. Fairfax is known for a balanced approach that blends underwriting expertise with a diversified investment portfolio. So, what’s ahead for Fairfax stock? The company’s future outlook remains optimistic, with plans to leverage its strong capital position for further growth. Fairfax stock is focused on disciplined underwriting and strategic . This could provide stability and opportunities for expansion. The emphasis is on long-term investments, even in volatile markets. Thus, Fairfax is an attractive choice for investors seeking growth alongside reliability. The retirement benefit For Canadians nearing or in retirement, Fairfax stock can be a valuable addition to a diversified investment portfolio. By investing in a strong company like Fairfax stock, individuals can potentially benefit from capital appreciation and income. This can help stretch their retirement savings further. Of course, it’s important to remember that investing always carries some risk. So, conducting thorough research and consulting with financial professionals is essential. Catching up on retirement savings is not just about picking the right stocks. It’s also about maximizing what you already have. Canadians should make full use of their RRSP and TFSA contribution limits. For example, contributions to an RRSP can lower taxable income, providing immediate tax benefits — all while investments grow tax-deferred until withdrawal. Meanwhile, the TFSA allows for tax-free growth, making it a great tool for compounding wealth. Bottom line Cutting back on non-essential expenses can also free up funds for investing. Every dollar saved and invested wisely today can have a compounding impact over the years. Combining disciplined saving habits with strategic investments in companies like Fairfax stock could significantly enhance your retirement nest egg. The average retirement savings for Canadians aged 65 may not be enough to sustain the life many envision. However, it’s never too late to take action. Investing in well-performing, stable companies like Fairfax stock, coupled with maximizing contributions to RRSPs and TFSAs, can help Canadians close the gap and build a more secure financial future. With a proactive approach, even those playing catch-up can look forward to a retirement that’s both comfortable and financially secure.Netanyahu argues ‘hostile’ Walla coverage, telecoms reforms prove bribery claims ‘absurd’
