About 54 per cent of eligible voters participated in the plebiscite, which was held to gauge community sentiment specifically on metallurgical coal mining by Northback Holdings Corp. The ballot posed the question, “Do you support the development and operations of the metallurgical coal mine at Grassy Mountain?” An advance poll was conducted on Nov. 19, followed by the primary voting day on Monday. The results showed 71.7 per cent of voters in favour of the project, while 28.3 per cent opposed it. Crowsnest Pass Mayor Blair Painter expressed satisfaction with the strong voter turnout and called the result a “real strong message” from the community. “I’m very pleased that we had over 53 per cent of the eligible voters turn out to vote on this subject,” Painter told Shootin’ the Breeze. “This sends a very strong message to our council that our community is in favour of ethical metallurgical coal mining in our area.” Painter emphasized the importance of understanding community preferences regarding a project that could affect housing, infrastructure and employment in the region. “We are the community that this mine primarily will draw from. Therefore, it is important that we need to know where our community stands and they have told us,” he said. However, he acknowledged that the municipal council’s role is limited to advocacy and that the ultimate decision on the proposed mine is not in their hands. “We are not the decision-maker on this project; we are only one of the stakeholders,” he noted, adding that council will move forward and continue to advocate. The Grassy Mountain coal mine project has been the subject of significant debate. On Sept. 10, Crowsnest Pass council passed a motion to conduct a non-binding vote, seeking input from residents on their support for the development and operations of the proposed mine. Since then, a long-standing debate has grown heated at times regarding the consequences of mining. Supporters have cited its potential to drive economic growth and create jobs, while critics have voiced concerns over environmental risks, such as selenium contamination and air quality issues due to dust generation. Painter acknowledged these concerns, stating, “Clean water is very important. We get that. Now you must also remember that the area of this mine site, Grassy Mountain, is not pristine mountaintops. It’s previously mined land with no reclamation.” He added that mining operations have made strides in addressing environmental concerns, citing global investments in clean-water technology by other mining companies. “Our mining neighbours to the west of us, Glencore, is spending billions of dollars on clean water technology. They are leaders globally in clean water,” he said. The mayor clarified that council’s next steps would involve internal deliberations, with no influence over the regulatory process or the mining company’s decisions. “We cannot control what they are going to do. They’re bound by the rules and regulations of our country. We cannot influence that,” he said. With countless videos catching the attention of the news media and social media users daily, there are likely wild videos you'll recall from 2024 that we overlooked. Still, we're taking time to look back at compelling videos that captured the attention of the nation — and the world — over the past year. From a whale breaching and landing on a boat to first responders making dramatic rescues, here's a look at some of the wildest videos we saw in 2024: Two people were thrown into the ocean after a whale landed on their fishing boat off the New Hampshire coast on the morning of July 23, and the entire incident was caught on video. The wild video shows the whale breaching, propelling fish out of the water. As the massive animal's mouth closes, it flops over onto the rear of the nearby fishing boat with two men aboard. See the video in the player above. A driver was saved from a fully submerged pickup on Sept. 11, 2024, in New Orleans as Hurricane Francine prompted a flash flood emergency. A good Samaritan, Miles Crawford, was in the area and when Crawford figured out what was happening he ran back to his home, grabbed something to break the truck window and saved the man’s life. A dramatic video captured in November shows a man being rescued after dangling from the edge of a cliff in San Francisco, California. The California Highway Patrol helicopter responded to the scene as the man struggled to hold on. A video released by the California Highway Patrol shows a crew member being lowered from the helicopter by a hoist to grab the man. The San Francisco Fire Department said the man did not sustain any injuries. A snowboarder narrowly escaped an avalanche on Mount Washington's Tuckerman Ravine in New Hampshire in December 2024. It was all caught on camera. Patrick Scanlan, of the Mount Washington Avalanche Center, said that while such situations are common, it is rare to catch such a scenario on camera. He said the incident serves as a crucial reminder for those eager to hit the slopes early in the season. The avalanche happened to be on a low angle and was moving slowly. The partial failure of the Rapidan Dam in Minnesota forced a landmark in Mankato to fall into the Blue Earth River . An 11-year-old boy recorded a dramatic video of the structure collapsing into the water. The house belonged to the owners of the Rapidan Dam Store, but fortunately, no one was home at the time. Due to Minnesota's historic flooding, the ground under the house had been undermined by water rushing around the 114-year-old dam, which partially failed in late June. A small plane made an emergency crash landing on the golf course in Northern California on Aug. 4. It came to rest at the pro shop, the Sacramento Fire Department said. The pilot walked away with a minor cut to his hand. No one else was hurt. Video shows several sunbathers at a popular Rhode Island beach screaming in late July when an enormous swarm of dragonflies suddenly overtook them. It happened at the crowded Misquamicut Beach, in Rhode Island. A dog was blamed for sparking a fire at an Oklahoma home in early August. The Tulsa Fire Department shared a video showing a dog getting a hold of and chewing on a lithium-ion battery that appeared to be in some type of charger. The dog chewed on it until the battery exploded, causing a dog bed to catch fire. Cameras were rolling when the ground opened up and swallowed part of a soccer field in Illinois in June. Aerial footage of the scene, which was provided by KMOV , shows the massive hole that was left behind on the athletic field in Alton, Illinois, which is around 22 miles outside of St. Louis, Missouri. The sinkhole opened up on Wednesday, June 26, and as a video shows, it even swallowed a stadium light post on the property. The sheriff's office said the individual was climbing back down the tower after livestreaming a video to his social media. The aviation team was able to direct ground deputies to the location of the climber. Koalas are normally found in eucalyptus trees, but one couple came home in Australia were were shocked to come home one November day to find one in their bedroom . Video showed the koala scurrying around the house, presumably looking for a way out, as Fran Dias Rufino, the homeowner, screamed frantically in the background. Koalas rarely attack people and are most often seen at the tops of trees, lazily chewing eucalyptus leaves. Rufino said her husband later used a blanket to shoo the koala away, and it found its way to the door. A life-saving scene played out on Sept. 12 on a busy stretch road in Michigan with a heroic act by a sheriff's deputy . Deputies Nicole Miron and Anthony Gross, with the Macomb County Sheriff's Department, were notified that a silver GMC Sierra pickup truck was driving erratically. Gross was driving, and Miron rolled down her window and tried to get the driver to stop, but he appeared to be in a daze. The driver managed to briefly hit his brakes and that's when Miron climbed from her passenger seat into the moving truck. Potentia Energy will be launched at the Sydney Opera House on Monday as an Australian renewable energy firm co-owned by Rome-headquartered Enel Green Power and INPEX. With rights in place for a development pipeline of over seven gigawatts across the country, Potentia is most focused on developing and acquiring assets in NSW, Queensland and Western Australia, chief executive Werther Esposito told AAP. The company is not deterred by the risk of political change, with opinion polls favouring the coalition ahead of the 2025 federal election. "The energy transition will go ahead in any case. There could be an acceleration or slowing down in the process," Mr Esposito said. "Renewables represent, from a technical and economic perspective, the solution for climate change," he said. "I don't think any government could deny that today wind and solar are cheaper than other technologies, and are faster in reaching the phase of deployment and construction and then supply of renewable energy." NSW had suffered some planning delays that had hit investment but there had been a "strong improvement" in the past 12 to 18 months, he said. The company also has a stake in Queensland, particularly in the north's Copperstring area, where the recently elected LNP government has pledged to stick by a massive transmission project begun under Labor. Enel won the bidding in 2024 to develop renewable energy to power a vanadium mining and processing project, which is one of a number of giant resources projects intended to be connected to the $9 billion Copperstring transmission line from Townsville to Mt Isa. WA offered a "huge opportunity" for the deployment of wind farms and battery energy storage systems, Mr Esposito said. Enel and INPEX joined forces in a share purchase agreement in 2023, with the renewables business operating plants comprising 310 megawatts of solar capacity across South Australia and Victoria and a 75MW wind farm in Western Australia. A 93MW solar farm is under commissioning in Victoria and financial close was recently announced for a hybrid 98MW solar and 20MW battery project in NSW. But with international firms lining up to exploit clean energy resources, Australians living alongside projects are demanding a share of future profits through community funds, power bill rebates and other benefits. "The energy transition should be just. To be just it means that you need to support the communities and involve the communities in a proper way," Mr Esposito said. He said Enel was proud of its legacy in providing support to areas facing a changing landscape and the impact of new infrastructure, including community funds, a focus on local hiring and providing training to support new jobs. "It's an approach that is, for us, absolutely a pillar of our strategy," he said. "We are still facing some regulatory ambiguity in what a social licence means, and we are trying to be a leader in the industry in helping and supporting all the key stakeholders in determining and defining what it is."

Yet here I am, making the case for the Crimson Tide as the team the College Football Playoff selection snubbed from the first 12-team field . ESPN’s Nick Saban, dressed in a crimson jacket on the selection show, tried to avoid sounding like a shill for the program he spent 17 years running, but his stance came through loud and clear. “All wins are not the same as other wins,” Saban said during ESPN’s excruciatingly long lead-in to revealing the bracket Sunday. “In other words, what we’ve always done publicly in college is look at record. We don’t look at strength of schedule. We don’t look at all those types of things.” This is a left-brain (analytical thinking), right-brain (emotional processing) deal. If the committee truly had looked at “those types of things,” if this was more of a data-driven process, Alabama would be in the Playoff instead of SMU. The Crimson Tide’s schedule was more rigorous. ESPN’s FPI has Alabama playing the 18th toughest schedule and SMU the 57th toughest. Most power rankings, which are forward-looking analytics, have Alabama ahead of SMU. The Athletic ’s own modeler, Austin Mock , would have Alabama as a six-point favorite on a neutral field against SMU. Years of recruiting rankings will tell you Alabama has one of the most talented rosters in the country and that the SEC is where the most good football players can be found. The SEC got three teams ( Georgia , Texas , Tennessee ) in the bracket, one fewer than the Big Ten and one more than the ACC. “As someone with access to college tape and staff of 11 former NFL scouts that logged hundreds of hours evaluating this CFB season, it’s easy to see why SEC coaches are upset with the final playoff bracket,” Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy posted on X. “Based strictly off future NFL talent, Alabama, South Carolina , & Ole Miss (and you can even throw in Florida, Texas A&M, and LSU for that matter) are all easily in Top-12.” Advertisement I get it. Alabama always seems to get the nod from the selection committee. When in doubt, go with the team that made the CFP eight times in 10 years when it was a four-team format — and won it three times. Even last year, the committee bypassed unbeaten Florida State because it lost star quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending injury in favor of one-loss Alabama. Do we really need to give the benefit of the doubt to the worst Alabama team in almost two decades, one that lost games to Oklahoma and Vanderbilt , both of which would not have been bowl-eligible if they hadn’t beaten the Tide? Most Alabama fans don’t even think their team had a good year. Left brain or right brain? How much did rallying around SMU have to do with the Mustangs’ story — a four-decade climb back from the NCAA death penalty — more than their resume? It sure would have felt awful to keep them out of the Playoff after they lost the ACC Championship Game on what will go down as one of the greatest, clutchest kicks in the history of college football by Clemson ’s Nolan Hauser . “When the announcement happened, honestly, I got emotional, just because I’m so happy for our kids,” SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said on ESPN. “They’ve worked so hard. They’ve won 22 games in the last two years. They laid it all on the line last night. We lost heartbreaking at the end to a great opponent.” The Mustangs put the committee in a difficult position and exposed a glaring flaw in the system, adding to the reasons why the CFP needs to do away with its weekly in-season rankings during the season’s final month. So much talk heading into conference championship weekend was about how much a team should be penalized for losing a title game. The committee’s answer was resounding: not much. Texas, Penn State and SMU all lost their conference title games. All were very competitive. None dropped more than two spots from last week’s rankings. Advertisement The rankings show is just that: a show. Content that helps get people talking about the Playoff in November. There is value to that. It is understandable that the conference commissioners who run the CFP would want to control the process instead of letting fans use the AP Top 25 to speculate about what the Playoff race looks like down the stretch. “I do believe it’s good for us to release our ranking, because our ranking is out there and competes with two others, the AP and the coaches,” committee chairman Warde Manuel said. “So I think it’s important, since they release a weekly ranking, that at the appropriate time in the season ... that we release how we’re thinking so people are not surprised in analyzing and trying to figure out how the committee is thinking about things.” The chairman has a talking point that the committee starts each week with a blank sheet of paper when it begins ranking teams. But Manuel also said last week that teams not playing on championship weekend were done being evaluated. They could move around based on the movement of other teams that were playing for league titles, but the order of teams such as Alabama, Miami , South Carolina, etc., was set. Saban pointed out the problem with SMU and Alabama was SMU entering the weekend ahead in the first place, and maybe he’s right. SMU should have been playing its way into the field instead of playing its way out in the ACC Championship Game, he said. “Playing in (the SEC), and I played in this conference for over 20 years, and when you have to go play Tennessee, then you have to go play LSU, then that team that you play next, now you might be more vulnerable to,” Saban said. Saban, Greg Sankey, the SEC and Alabama don’t make for the most sympathetic victims, nor should they be viewed that way. Defending them all feels like demanding that the spoiled kid who seems to have all the toys also gets a pony — or in this case, the Ponies’ spot in the Playoff. JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s attorney general has ordered police to open an investigation into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife on suspicion of harassing political opponents and witnesses in the Israeli leader’s corruption trial. The Israeli Justice Ministry made the announcement in a terse message late Thursday, saying the investigation would focus on the findings of a recent report by the “Uvda” investigative program into Sara Netanyahu. The program uncovered a trove of WhatsApp messages in which Mrs. Netanyahu appears to instruct a former aid to organize protests against political opponents and to intimidate Hadas Klein, a key witness in the trial. The announcement did not mention Mrs. Netanyahu by name, and the Justice Ministry declined further comment. But in a video released earlier Thursday, Netanyahu listed what he said were the many kind and charitable acts by his wife and blasted the Uvda report as “lies.” It was the latest in a long line of legal troubles for the Netanyahus — highlighted by the prime minister's ongoing corruption trial . Netanyahu is charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in a series of cases alleging he exchanged favors with powerful media moguls and wealthy associates. Netanyahu denies the charges and says he is the victim of a “witch hunt” by overzealous prosecutors, police and the media.
