After drastic fall, UConn men to face No. 15 Baylor
NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart’s sweeping rollback of its diversity policies is the strongest indication yet of a profound shift taking hold at U.S. companies that are revaluating the legal and political risks associated with bold programs to bolster historically underrepresented groups in business. The followed a string of legal victories by conservative groups that have filed an onslaught of lawsuits challenging corporate and federal programs aimed at elevating minority and women-owned businesses and employees. The risk associated with some of programs crystalized with the election of former President Donald Trump, whose administration is certain to make dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion programs a priority. Trump’s incoming deputy chief of policy will be his former adviser , who leads a group called America First Legal that has aggressively challenged corporate DEI policies. “There has been a lot of reassessment of risk looking at programs that could be deemed to constitute reverse discrimination,” said Allan Schweyer, principal researcher the Human Capital Center at the Conference Board. “This is another domino to fall and it is a rather large domino,” he added. Among other changes, Walmart said it will no longer give priority treatment to suppliers owned by women or minorities. The company also will not renew a five-year commitment for a racial equity center set up in 2020 after the police killing of George Floyd. And it pulled out of a . Schweyer said the biggest trigger for companies making such changes is simply a reassessment of their legal risk exposure, which began after that ended affirmative action in college admissions. Since then, conservative groups using similar arguments have secured court victories against various diversity programs, especially those that steer contracts to minority or women-owned businesses. Most recently, the conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty won a victory in a case against the U.S. Department of Transportation over its use of a program that gives priority to minority-owned businesses when it awards contracts. Companies are seeing a big legal risk in continuing with DEI efforts, said Dan Lennington, a deputy counsel at the institute. His organization says it has identified more than 60 programs in the federal government that it considers discriminatory, he said. “We have a legal landscape within the entire federal government, all three branches — the U.S. Supreme Court, the Congress and the President — are all now firmly pointed in the direction towards equality of individuals and individualized treatment of all Americans, instead of diversity, equity and inclusion treating people as members of racial groups,” Lennington said. The Trump administration is also likely to take direct aim at DEI initiatives through executive orders and other policies that affect private companies, especially federal contractors. “The impact of the election on DEI policies is huge. It can’t be overstated,” said Jason Schwartz, co-chair of the Labor & Employment Practice Group at law firm Gibson Dunn. With Miller returning to the White House, rolling back DEI initiatives is likely to be a priority, Schwartz said. “Companies are trying to strike the right balance to make clear they’ve got an inclusive workplace where everyone is welcome, and they want to get the best talent, while at the same time trying not to alienate various parts of their employees and customer base who might feel one way or the other. It’s a virtually impossible dilemma,” Schwartz said. A recent survey by Pew Research Center showed that workers are divided on the merits of DEI policies. While still broadly popular, the share of workers who said focusing on workplace diversity was mostly a good thing fell to 52% in the November survey, compared to 56% in a similar survey in February 2023. Rachel Minkin, a research associated at Pew called it a small but significant shift in short amount of time. There will be more companies pulling back from their DEI policies, but it likely won’t be a retreat across the board, said David Glasgow, executive director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at New York University. “There are vastly more companies that are sticking with DEI,” Glasgow said. “The only reason you don’t hear about it is most of them are doing it by stealth. They’re putting their heads down and doing DEI work and hoping not to attract attention.” Glasgow advises organizations to stick to their own core values, because attitudes toward the topic can change quickly in the span of four years. “It’s going to leave them looking a little bit weak if there’s a kind of flip-flopping, depending on whichever direction the political winds are blowing,” he said. One reason DEI programs exist is because without those programs, companies may be vulnerable to lawsuits for traditional discrimination. “Really think carefully about the risks in all directions on this topic,” Glasgow said. Walmart confirmed will no longer consider race and gender as a litmus test to improve diversity when it offers supplier contracts. Last fiscal year, Walmart said it spent more than $13 billion on minority, women or veteran-owned good and service suppliers. It was unclear how its relationships with such business would change going forward. Organizations that that have partnered with Walmart on its diversity initiatives offered a cautious response. The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, a non-profit that last year named Walmart one of America’s top corporation for women-owned enterprises, said it was still evaluating the impact of Walmart’s announcement. Pamela Prince-Eason, the president and CEO of the organization, said she hoped Walmart’s need to cater to its diverse customer base will continue to drive contracts to women-owned suppliers even if the company no longer has explicit dollar goals. “I suspect Walmart will continue to have one of the most inclusive supply chains in the World,” Prince-Eason wrote. “Any retailer’s ability to serve the communities they operate in will continue to value understanding their customers, (many of which are women), in order to better provide products and services desired and no one understands customers better than Walmart.” Walmart’s announcement came after the company spoke directly with conservative political commentator and activist Robby Starbuck, who has been going after corporate DEI policies, calling out individual companies on the social media platform X. Several of those companies have subsequently announced that they are pulling back their initiatives, including , Harley-Davidson, and . Walmart confirmed to The Associated Press that it will better monitor its third-party marketplace items to make sure they don’t feature sexual and transgender products aimed at minors. The company also will stop participating in the Human Rights Campaign’s annual benchmark index that measures workplace inclusion for LGBTQ+ employees. A Walmart spokesperson added that some of the changes were already in progress and not as a result of conversations that it had with Starbuck. RaShawn “Shawnie” Hawkins, senior director of the HRC Foundation’s Workplace Equality Program, said companies that “abandon” their commitments workplace inclusion policies “are shirking their responsibility to their employees, consumers, and shareholders.” She said the buying power of LGBTQ customers is powerful and noted that the index will have record participation of more than 1,400 companies in 2025.AKRON, Ohio — CJ Nunnally IV sacked quarterback Tucker Gleason on the final play of the game and Akron beat Toledo 21-14 in overtime on Tuesday night to end the Mid-American Conference regular season for both teams. It was Akron's first win over Toledo since the Zips beat the Rockets 31-29 on Nov. 29, 2013. Akron (4-8, 3-5) ended the season with a two-game win streak which was its only one of the year. The bowl eligible Rockets (7-5, 4-4) lost their last two games of the regular season. Down 21-14 and facing fourth-and-goal at Akron's 4, Nunnally came off the left edge as Gleason rolled right and he proceeded to roll him to the turf to end the game. Akron went up 21-14 on the first play of overtime when quarterback Ben Finley rolled right and appeared ready to tuck and run, but he pulled up and threw it to Charles Kellom who ran it in for the go-ahead score. Toledo's Dylan Cunanan missed a 29-yard field attempt as time expired at the end of regulation for the chance to win it. Cunanan earlier missed from 45 and 26 yards. The Rockets knotted it at 14 in the fourth quarter when Gleason threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Torres and a 19-yarder to Jerjuan Newton at the end of a seven-play, 92-yard drive with 3:26 left in overtime. Akron started the scoring when Finley threw a 72-yard touchdown to Ahmarian Green in the first quarter, and Tahj Bullock ran it in from the 1 to start the fourth.

Promising review: "The comfort of these headphones are like nothing else. I literally have them on EVERY. NIGHT. and they cause zero discomfort. The sound is excellent always with both speakers working. They charge quickly and stay working all night. I wear them for 10 hours and they never run out of charge. They are so comfortable and do not slide around your head and are not tight with the fabric used. It seems like it would fit any size head. They are not tight to cause marks on your forehead or hurt your ears. You don’t even feel them when you lie on your side . I’ve actually bought more for my children who, at times, have trouble sleeping...They exceed my expectations." — Cyndra Price: $15.99 (originally $19.99; available in 20 colors) 4. It comes with 44 strips total: enough for 20 regular treatments and two one-hour express treatments Promising review: "I haven't used Crest White Strips in over 5 years. Since then my teeth have stayed really white and I frequently get compliments or questions on how I get my teeth so white. I decided to get a box to boost the whiteness of my teeth. Wow, I was shocked on how much these have improved! Before the strips were really flimsy, hard to remove from the package and were really hard to keep on your teeth - the old ones would slip or bunch up. These are such an improvement! The new strips remove easily from the plastic they are on. The strips are REALLY adhesive! These will not budge! Since I've purchased I have only used about 4 times and I can already notice a difference. Other people have noticed too. I think these are well worth the money and work as good as a professional treatment, I have had friends who have done professional treatments and their teeth are not as white as mine. I highly recommend these to anyone who wants a brighter/whiter smile!" — Vanessa5o5 Price: $29.99 (originally $49.99) 5. I was reading online and stumbled on these and thought 'Hmmm...wonder if my uber-expensive sheets are actually making me hot at night??' I ordered these and I'm sleeping like a baby now. No more night sweats. Ordering some for my son as well. Game changer! High quality and exceptional price." — J. Marshall Promising review: "I read from other reviews these sheets were soft so I wasn't too surprised when I received them and man are they soft and so comfortable. We have Egyptian cotton sheets that were expensive and I promise we have changed them back out for the comfort of these sheets. The cotton sheets were cold and these were just right. The other thing is my husband has thin skin that any nick he will bleed. Well he has bled on these white sheets and when we washed them (in cold water as instructed) the blood always comes out and never stains. I can't say enough great things about them except to say all three of my adult kids are receiving a set as part of their Christmas! I can never go back to a regular toothbrush after using an electric toothbrush; there's no comparison in how much of a better job this thing does on my teeth. The hardest part of using it was getting used to letting it do the brushing; I keep wanting to use it like a regular toothbrush and move it up and down for brushing strokes. I finally stopping manually making brushing strokes and just let it do it's thing. My hygienist could see the improvement during my first cleaning after using this toothbrush. I gave one to a friend as a birthday gift and she loves it. No snail-like results here: Just pat it in, and you’ll be appreciating the moisture boost right away. Reviewers say it helps with acne , inflammation , peeling, fine lines , and more! Promising review: "This product is everything everyone says it is and more. If I could recommend one product that is the key to glass skin, it would be this. It gives an immediate glow, and makes the skin look so supple and healthy. The texture wasn't off-puting for me, but it is a bit slimy and stringy when you first pump out the product. It absorbs pretty quickly and doesn't leave a sticky residue, and it is unscented. Can't say enough good things about this product and the brand. You need this product in your life!" — Sarah Deeb Price: $9.58 (originally $25) — and check out all the Cosrx products on sale for Prime Day 13. The viral Tirtir foundation cushion for 39% off that 10,000+ reviewers rated 5-stars for providing full coverage without the heavy, cakey feeling. It's designed to provide a radiant finish (hello, glass skin!) and reviewers says it pulls through on its long-lasting claims. Promising review: "I was skeptical buying this just because I’ve seen it all over TikTok. But once I saw it was on Amazon, I had to buy it since Amazon makes it easy to return if I don’t like it. But let me tell you, this is by far the BEST makeup product I have ever owned. I have the Dior concealer for my under eyes and it does nothing compared to this. This covers my dark circles completely and any hyperpigmentation! I showed my boyfriend, and he asked if I even had makeup on because my skin looked so natural but flawless. I don’t even need to use a lot and it’s completely full coverage. It feels like I have nothing on my skin! My pores are completely covered (no primer) and it honestly makes me look 5 years younger! I’m not even joking. I am not a fan of foundations because they always feel heavy and look cakey but not this. My face looks like a baby’s bum! Lol This is now my forever concealer and foundation. I can’t wait to return all of my expensive concealers I have because none of them compare to this. I’m shocked that it took me this long to give this a try and it’s now my holy grail. Just use a little at first! Don’t dab the sponge too hard because I promise you that it’s picking up product and it’ll be more than enough. It does not set into the fine lines under my eyes either. It does oxidize a little so before you say it’s too light, let it sit for like 20 minutes and then decide. I can’t wait to put all of my friends and family onto this! LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS! Also, it really is waterproof because I tried to wash it off around my eyes and I had to use a make up wipe. That might be a con for some, but I honestly don’t care because it’s just so perfect on me throughout the day. Do you’re a favor and buy it! Trust me it’s so worth it. Best purchase I’ve ever made on Amazon." — Chellseynicole Price: $15 (typically $24.70; available in 40 shades) 14. There is ample storage and pockets inside, as well as a zipping divider to hold clothes on the top section of the suitcase. The outside is a hard plastic that seems waterproof and is tough. I dropped my fully loaded suitcase down about six stairs and was surprised the outer shell was only scuffed. I would highly recommend this product!" — Blaize Price: $74.49 (originally $109.99; available in three sizes, four colors, and multiple sets). 15. The TikTok-famous Bissell Little Green carpet and upholstery cleaner for 34% off for knocking out pet stains , spills, and more — without having to waste a lot of your valuable storage space. Promising review: "Yup, saw it on TikTok and had to buy it. My car's upholstery was so dirty from my dogs and years of NOT getting it deep cleaned. This is a game changer. I should've taken a before and after because it was awesome. Not to mention how satisfying it is seeing the dirty water get sucked back into the tank. Easy to prep. Easy to use. Easy to clean. I definitely recommend. This will be perfect for other things in the house as well because if it can tackle MY car with two big dogs , it's gold." — Taylor L. Price: $81.49 (originally $123.59) 16. The roller is super easy to use and incredibly effective. Just run it over any surface, and watch as the pet hair sticks to it like a cat to a warm lap. It's like a magical wand that waves away all the fuzz! I've used other lint rollers in the past, but none of them compare to the Chom Chom. It's the purrfect solution for pet hair problems. I no longer have to decide between being unable to wear black again!" — Bruce Salas Price: $15.99 (originally $24.99; available in three colors) 18. I literally have tried to cut or snag myself with this and still can't. This makes grooming those hard to see/reach areas sooooooo much easier." — James W. Price: $29.96 (originally $37.99) 19. A classic KitchenAid stand mixer for 27% off (a really solid deal!) so you can give your arms a break next time you want to bake something from scratch. This is one of those things you'll buy once and enjoy forever. Psst while that floral blue bowl on the left isn't currently available, you can check out all the different bowl designs you can get on the KitchenAid Amazon store page ! Promising review: "I had a stand mixer prior to getting this one, but it was lightweight (literally and performance-wise) compared to this one. So far, I've used it for general batter mixing and with very stiff cookie dough, which it handled like a champ. Can't wait to try it out on bread dough. It came with a wire whip, a dough paddle, and a bread dough hook. It is very heavy and doesn't budge on the counter while I'm using it. It's extremely powerful and handles everything I can throw at it with ease. I've been upgrading to better quality tools in my kitchen and this mixer did not disappoint. The aqua color is beautiful in my kitchen, too. It was pricey but is well worth the price. It pays off in quality and performance. Highly recommended." — farmkiti Price: $329.95 (originally $449.95; available in 21 colors) 20. It worked out great, nothing difficult, we didn't need to cheat and use water to get it out. It took a 1-1.5 hours to get everything out and then lots of research with the book. She's already asking for another of this same exact kit for Christmas. If definitely buy again." — GirlMomB Price: $18.99 (originally $24.99) 21. A mini Bluetooth speaker for 38% off (currently the lowest price we've seen!) with a clip to easily attach to your bag or belt loop. Because it's waterproof, many reviewers even clip to their caddies in the shower! Promising review: "Got this for an upcoming trip. I had to try it out to see how well it performs. I’m sooo impressed by it. First off, the battery is 10 hours. I can attest to it. I was amazed by how long it lasted. It was easy to charge. It comes with a USB-C cable. No charging block but I have plenty of those. As for the sound, it works well. I thought cause it’s small, the sound would be rather generic and weak. Nope!! It actually has quite a bit of bass to it. It sounds good, and overall, I like the design. The carabiner clip makes it easy to carry when traveling. It’s sturdy and it’s quite easy to pair to a phone or device for listening...I think it’s definitely worth the price. Plus, it was on sale, so that’s another positive for it." — Magnus4000 Price: $39.95 (originally $64.95; available in 16 colors) 23. The Bissel Cleanview cordless vacuum for 35% off (also a lowest recorded price) designed with pet households in mind — it has a deep-cleaning "furbrush" to pick up hair from upholstery, floors, and your car interior, powerful suction, lights to help you see the mess in front of you, and a ~SmartSeal~ system to trap allergens like dust and dander. And it easily converts from a stick vac to a hand vac! Promising review: "In the last 10 years I’ve had a Dyson, Shark, 2 off brand cordless vacuums and now this Bissell. I would say I’m an expert on the cordless stick vacuum, and this is top of the charts!! I have a dog that sheds, so I vacuum daily. I chose this vacuum because of the pet hair attachment and it doesn’t disappoint! It works as well as the Dyson, and is substantially better than the Shark, for less than half of what either of those cost. It came with a nice variety of attachments, as well as a wall charging mount. The vacuum is sturdy, portable, and very easy to use." — A Hudson Price: $149.99 (originally $229.99) 24. These don’t dig and just get more comfortable every time you wear them. I bought the blush color and they are a perfect for a neutral pair of everyday flats. Thinking of purchasing more colors! Promising review: "Have used it a few times now and have had no problems, cooks the food evenly and cleans up good. Just remember this is enameled cast iron so it retains heat longer. When cooking on an electric stove (coil or class top) don't cook on high and this should last you a long time. But the true test is how do you feel the next day right? You cannot always walk around with a massage gun in your hand. The next day, I felt AMAZING. AMAZING. I used it on my hubby's back too, and he said he felt so much better today as well! In addition, this one is way QUIETER than my original massage gun. It's just really a quality piece. You won't be disappointed in this one. It really is what it says. I know it is hard to choose from all the models on the internet, but this one is the real deal. It's worth the money if you have pain." — L Johnson Price: $69.99 (originally $89.99; available in three colors) 30. And money-saving alert: reviewers say it's comparable to the SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic serum (which costs $182 for the full-size, btw!). Promising review : "I should have started using this years ago! I’m in my mid-30s, and I’ve tried everything, including much more expensive brands, Korean skincare , Japanese skincare, etc., but I’ve always had breakouts and problems with texture. This is by far the best vitamin C product I’ve tried. I’ve tried multiple vitamin C serums in the past, but they always broke me out or had a slimy or gritty texture. This serum has a smooth texture, soaks in quickly, does not pill with other products, and has noticeably cleared up my skin." — Amazon Customer Price: $21.41 (typically $37.36; also available in a smaller size) 31.
