Maine's voter-approved limit on PAC contributions triggers lawsuit in federal courtSocial media users are misrepresenting a report released Thursday by the Justice Department inspector general's office, falsely claiming that it's proof the FBI orchestrated the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. The watchdog report examined a number of areas, including whether major intelligence failures preceded the riot and whether the FBI in some way provoked the violence. Claims spreading online focus on the report's finding that 26 FBI informants were in Washington for election-related protests on Jan. 6, including three who had been tasked with traveling to the city to report on others who were potentially planning to attend the events. Although 17 of those informants either entered the Capitol or a restricted area around the building during the riot, none of the 26 total informants were authorized to do so by the bureau, according to the report. Nor were they authorized to otherwise break the law or encourage others to do so. Here's a closer look at the facts. CLAIM: A December 2024 report released by the Department of Justice's Office of the Inspector General is proof that the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was a setup by the FBI. THE FACTS: That's false. The report found that no undercover FBI employees were at the riot on Jan. 6 and that none of the bureau's informants were authorized to participate. Informants, also known as confidential human sources, work with the FBI to provide information, but are not on the bureau’s payroll. Undercover agents are employed by the FBI. According to the report, 26 informants were in Washington on Jan. 6 in connection with the day's events. FBI field offices only informed the Washington Field Office or FBI headquarters of five informants that were to be in the field on Jan. 6. Of the total 26 informants, four entered the Capitol during the riot and an additional 13 entered a restricted area around the Capitol. But none were authorized to do so by the FBI, nor were they given permission to break other laws or encourage others to do the same. The remaining nine informants did not engage in any illegal activities. None of the 17 informants who entered the Capitol or surrounding restricted area have been prosecuted, the report says. A footnote states that after reviewing a draft of the report, the U.S. attorney's office in Washington said that it “generally has not charged those individuals whose only crime on January 6, 2021 was to enter restricted grounds surrounding the Capitol, which has resulted in the Office declining to charge hundreds of individuals; and we have treated the CHSs consistent with this approach.” Related: The assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office's counterterrorism division told the inspector general's office that he “denied a request from an FBI office to have an undercover employee engage in investigative activity on January 6.” He, along with then-Washington Field Office Assistant Director in Charge Steven D'Antuono, said that FBI policy prohibits undercover employees at First Amendment-protected events without investigative authority. Many social media users drew false conclusions from the report's findings. TREASON!” The mention of Wray's resignation refers to FBI Director Christopher Wray's announcement Wednesday that he plans to resign at the end of President Joe Biden's term in January. Other users highlighted the fact that there were 26 FBI informants in Washington on Jan. 6, but omitted key information about the findings of the report. These claims echo a fringe conspiracy theory advanced by some Republicans in Congress that the FBI played a role in instigating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when rioters determined to overturn Republican Donald Trump's 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden stormed the Capitol in a violent clash with police. The report knocks that theory down. Wray called such theories “ludicrous” at a congressional hearing last year. Asked for comment on the false claims spreading online, Stephanie Logan, a spokesperson for the inspector general’s office, pointed The Associated Press to a press release about the report. In addition to its findings about the the FBI's involvement on Jan. 6, the report said that the FBI, in an action its now-deputy director described as a “basic step that was missed,” failed to canvass informants across all 56 of its field offices for any relevant intelligence ahead of time. That was a step, the report concluded, “that could have helped the FBI and its law enforcement partners with their preparations in advance of January 6.” However, it did credit the bureau for preparing for the possibility of violence and for trying to identify known “domestic terrorism subjects” who planned to come to Washington that day. In the wake of Donald Trump's victory , Trump voters and Republicans are relatively a bit more open to political chat than Kamala Harris voters and Democrats are, but most on either side aren't particularly looking forward to politics with their poultry. When asked to choose from a list, it's family and friends that Americans say they're especially thankful for this year. It is the top choice across a wide swath of Americans, including all regions, age and racial groups, and across the political spectrum. Following family and friends, Americans say they are especially thankful for their health and freedom. Matters of politics and government rank at the bottom of the list. Whether people plan to engage in political conversation at Thanksgiving may depend on the company. Many people do report that they'll be gathering with like-minded voters this Thanksgiving: Harris voters say they'll mostly be with fellow Harris supporters and Trump voters say they'll mostly be with fellow Trump supporters. When that happens, they'll be relatively more open to political discussion than those who'll be spending the holiday with a mix of voters, or with those who mostly voted for the other candidate. All that said, few are going out of their way to avoid political differences altogether. Just 1 in 10 say they have changed their plans to avoid gathering with people who voted for a different presidential candidate than they did. If Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts is unavailable for their Week 17 tilt with the rival Dallas Cowboys, they'll at least have Kenny Pickett at their disposal. Hurts remains in concussion protocol while also dealing with a finger injury on his non-throwing hand. He did not practice on Thursday, but QB2 Pickett (ribs) was a full participant. Pickett told reporters after practice Thursday that he expects to be able to play. He "tested out some different things padding-wise" in anticipation of being on the field Sunday against visiting Dallas, when the Eagles can clinch the NFC East title with a victory. "It is what it is. Just something I'm going to have to deal with," Pickett said. "So, yeah, I'll be ready to go for Sunday." Hurts was injured last Sunday in the Eagles' loss to the Washington Commanders. His head hit the turf while being tackled by Frankie Luvu and Bobby Wagner. Hurts connected on just 1 of 4 passes for 11 yards before he exited the game. Pickett took over and produced 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 14-of-24 passing as Washington rallied to beat Philadelphia 36-33. It was later revealed that Pickett hurt his ribs during the game. "I think after a couple more days, getting a chance to kind of rest it a little bit more, go do some rehab, I'll be good for Sunday," Pickett said. Nick Sabam was giddy about Haynes in spring practice and his excitement for him continued into the season. Much was expected from Haynes this season and he totaled seven rushing scores and 448 yards, but did he have enough opportunities to showcase his talents? Statistics would say no as he averaged six carries per game. He is heading to place where he can be the featured back, but what does it mean for Alabama’s running back room? Jam Miller is the featured guy in the backfield. He finished the regular season with 641 yards rushing and seven touchdowns on 135 carries. The coaching staff trusted Miller more with the ball as he averaged nearly 12 carries a game (11.25). He was an exceptional pass-blocker and caught 13 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. If Miller chooses to forgo the NFL Draft and return for his senior season, he would be the biggest voice in the running back room. Richard Young, a former 5-star from the 2023 class, would be the next important back. Young, a native Floridian, would be fully healthy next season — starting in the spring. He was banged up at times this season; however, he finished with 25 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Young brings a physicality to him, but he also has some speed. He needs to develop more breakaway speed on big runs to be a home run hitter. Daniel Hill and Kevin Riley were freshmen this season, but now it’s time for them to be called on more. Hill, a native Mississippian, has a rushing touchdown as a power back. Riley, a Tuscaloosa native, has more speed and explosiveness. Alabama also has Akylin Dear, a freshman signee from Mississippi, in the room too. It will be interesting to see how he fits the rotation. It does not feel good to lose Haynes, but Alabama has not had a game-breaker at running back since Jahmyr Gibbs. Miller will be good for the Tide and Young has the potential, but should Alabama hit the portal for a back? We will see what the coaches do. The Los Angeles Chargers activated running back J.K. Dobbins from injured reserve on Friday. Dobbins is formally listed as questionable but figures to be the team's top running threat for Saturday's road game against the New England Patriots. Teammate Gus Edwards (ankle) was ruled out Thursday. Dobbins has missed the past four games since sustaining a knee injury against the Baltimore Ravens on Nov. 25. He was a full practice participant Thursday before receiving the questionable label. The injury-prone Dobbins was enjoying a solid season prior to the knee ailment, with 766 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground and 28 receptions for 134 yards in 11 games. His career high for rushing yardage is 805 for the Ravens in 2020. Dobbins' return comes with the Chargers (9-6) just one win from clinching an AFC wild-card playoff spot. A 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and prevent an artificial intelligence "dictatorship" is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker's ongoing shift into a for-profit company. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a nonprofit research lab benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. The world's richest man, whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX and social media platform X, last year started his own rival AI company, xAI. Musk says it faces unfair competition from OpenAI and its close business partner Microsoft, which has supplied the huge computing resources needed to build AI systems such as ChatGPT. “OpenAI and Microsoft together exploiting Musk’s donations so they can build a for-profit monopoly, one now specifically targeting xAI, is just too much,” says Musk's filing that alleges the companies are violating the terms of Musk’s foundational contributions to the charity. OpenAI is filing a response Friday opposing Musk’s requested order, saying it would cripple OpenAI’s business and mission to the advantage of Musk and his own AI company. A hearing is set for January before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland. At the heart of the dispute is a 2017 internal power struggle at the fledgling startup that led to Altman becoming OpenAI's CEO. Musk also sought to be CEO and in an email outlined a plan where he would “unequivocally have initial control of the company” but said that would be temporary. He grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence , or AGI. The controversy around a religious Christmas sign that was taken down in downtown Kelowna continues. Two days after a sign stating 'Keep Christ in Christmas' was removed from the nativity scene display at Stuart Park, Kelowna-Centre MLA Kristina Loewen went to social media to express her opinion on the matter. "We believe that it's an important detail that Christmas is a Christian holiday," said Loewen in her video, referring to 'we' as all of the MLAs for the Central Okanagan. "We will be standing united and defending all British Columbians rights to religion and freedom of expression, speech, thought, belief," she added. "Canada is an incredible country full of diverse cultures and religions, and a wide variety of views, and I think that's one of the things that makes us so incredible." Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream MLA Tara Armstrong agreed with her fellow Conservative, quote-tweeting the video and saying "a great message from a colleague and friend. I'm proud to be part of a team that stands for what's right." Macklin McCall, MLA for West Kelowna, also quote-tweeted Loewen's post. However, Kelowna-Mission MLA Gavin Dew appears to not have commented on social media. The nativity scene is put up by the Knights of Columbus every year and a permit is given from the City of Kelowna to do so. When the 'Keep Christ in Christmas' sign was displayed beside the scene on Monday, Dec. 9, some people in the community, including the Kelowna Atheists, Skeptics, and Humanists Association (KASHA) took issue. A letter by KASHA to Black Press Media on Dec. 9, stated the nativity scene is part of Christmas, just as "lights, festive trees, and other decorative displays" are also. "This message is not merely festive—it is political, advocating for a specific religious interpretation of the holiday," said KASHA about the sign. The next day, the sign was taken down and the City of Kelowna confirmed that the sign was not part of the Knights of Columbus' permit for the nativity scene. The Knights of Columbus had no comment regarding the matter. Capital News reached out to Loewen for further comment but was met with an automatic e-mail reply. Additionally, the City of Kelowna stated it had no comment on Loewen's video. However, Ian Bushfield the executive director of the B.C. Humanist Association did have a comment. "Freedom of religion in Canada includes freedom from religion," said Bushfield in an e-mailed statement. "Ms. Loewen and all Christians are obviously free to celebrate Christmas as a Christian holiday but our governments have a clear duty of religious neutrality. That means neither endorsing nor prohibiting any religion over any other. That sign, and arguably even the nativity scene, being on public property breaches that duty. She can put the sign up at her church or at her own house but we do not live in a theocracy." PUNE The Vikhe-Patil family, a prominent name in Maharashtra politics, made a dramatic comeback in the recent state assembly elections, avenging their previous defeat in the Lok Sabha polls and ensuring their opponents faced significant setbacks. In the assembly election, the Mahayuti alliance clinched 10 out of 12 assembly seats in Ahmednagar district. This was a major reversal from 2019 elections when the Congress-Nationalisy Congress Party (NCP) alliance had won eight seats, an independent secured one, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena bagged three seats. The political stakes were particularly high for the Vikhe-Patil family after Sujay Vikhe-Patil’s loss to NCP (SP) candidate Nilesh Lanke in the Ahmednagar Lok Sabha constituency. Sujay’s defeat had raised questions about the family’s political future. At that time, Balasaheb Thorat and other local Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders played a key role in securing Lanke’s victory, with Lanke emerging as a giant killer. The tide turned in the recent assembly polls, with the Vikhe-Patils leading a calculated campaign to unseat their political adversaries. Sujay’s father, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, retained the Shirdi seat he has held since 1995, defeating Congress’s Prabhavati Ghogare by a margin of over 70,000 votes, despite an intense campaign by MVA leaders. This time, the Vikhe-Patil family orchestrated a counter-attack, ensuring the defeat of major MVA figures. Eight-time MLA and Congress stalwart Balasaheb Thorat was unseated in Sangamner, a constituency dominated by Thorat’s institutions and influence. Similarly, Nilesh Lanke’s wife, Rani, faced defeat in Parner at the hands of a fresh face Kashinath Date from NCP. We waited patiently and, when the opportunity arose, delivered a fitting response in Parner and Sangamner,” he said. In Sangamner, Radhakrishna ensured that his loyalist, BJP worker Amol Khatal, received the Shiv Sena ticket to contest against Thorat. A close associate of the Vikhe-Patil family commented, “In Ahmednagar, whoever opposes Balasaheb Thorat is on our side, irrespective of party affiliations. This time, we conducted our own surveys, identified promising candidates, and planned meticulously to take revenge. As in past years, YouTube was the single most popular platform teenagers used — 90% said they watched videos on the site, down slightly from 95% in 2022. Nearly three-quarters said they visit YouTube every day. There was a slight downward trend in several popular apps teens used. For instance, 63% of teens said they used TikTok, down from 67% and Snapchat slipped to 55% from 59%. This small decline could be due to pandemic-era restrictions easing up and kids having more time to see friends in person, but it’s not enough to be truly meaningful . X saw the biggest decline among teenage users. Only 17% of teenagers said they use X, down from 23% in 2022, the year Elon Musk bought the platform. Reddit held steady at 14%. About 6% of teenagers said they use Threads, Meta’s answer to X that launched in 2023. The report comes as countries around the world are grappling with how to handle the effects of social media on young people’s well-being. Australia recently passed a law banning kids under 16 from social networks, though it’s unclear how it will be able to enforce the age limit — and whether it will come with unintended consequences such as isolating vulnerable kids from their peers. Pew also asked kids how often they use various online platforms. Small but significant numbers said they are on them “almost constantly.” For YouTube, 15% reported constant use, for TikTok, 16% and for Snapchat, 13%. As in previous surveys, girls were more likely to use TikTok almost constantly while boys gravitated to YouTube. There was no meaningful gender difference in the use of Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. Roughly a quarter of Black and Hispanic teens said they visit TikTok almost constantly, compared with just 8% of white teenagers.
