"The cabinet expresses profound sorrow over the sad demise of Dr Manmohan Singh," said the resolution it passed. He "has left his imprint on our national life. In his passing away, the nation has lost an eminent statesman, renowned economist and a distinguished leader. The cabinet extends its heartfelt condolences on behalf of the government and entire nation to the bereaved family." A meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) paid accolades to the party's last Prime Minister, and listed his achievements and contributions. In a personal message, former Congress president and CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi , who chose Singh for the post of Prime Minister in 2004 after she turned it down, praised his achievements. "For me, Dr Manmohan Singh-ji's death is a deeply personal loss," she said. "He was my friend, philosopher and guide. He was so gentle in his manner but so resolute in his deeply held convictions. His commitment to social justice, secularism and democratic values was deep and unwavering. To spend any time with him was to come away enlightened by his knowledge and sagacity, moved by honesty and integrity and awed by his genuine humility." Singh's body will be brought to the Congress headquarters at 24, Akbar Road at 8 am on Saturday. "The public and Congress workers will have the opportunity to offer their tributes between 8.30 am and 9.30 am," said AICC general secretary KC Venugopal. PK Mishra, principal secretary to Prime Minister Modi, recalled his student days at the Delhi School of Economics, where Singh was a professor. "Dr Manmohan Singh had a remarkable ability to explain complex topics in international trade in a way every student could understand, making learning easier for students. He was extremely unassuming and low profile," he said. Mishra had worked as secretary to the National Disaster Management Authority and secretary in the ministry of agriculture when Singh was PM. A steady stream of condolence messages poured in from diplomats and admirers of Singh from various walks of life. (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
Formula 1 announced Monday that it has approved the entry of GM and Cadillac as a new team on the grid, bringing a storied American car maker into the pinnacle of motorsport . The announcement, which is part of an application initiated by racing team Andretti Global, shakes up the F1 world and could provide a boost to the fast-growing U.S. market with the arrival of the storied American car manufacturer. It comes two days after the Las Vegas Grand Prix . F1 said in a statement that it “reached an agreement in principle with General Motors (GM) to support bringing GM/Cadillac as the eleventh team to the Formula 1 grid in 2026.” The much-anticipated decision follows a year-long saga marked by drama and bitter tensions within F1 after Andretti Global applied to join the grid and gained the approval of the sport’s governing body FIA — only to get rejected by the Liberty Media-owned commercial side of F1, which questioned whether Andretti would bring sufficient value to the sport or be competitive. But the added promise from GM to become a “works” team — building both a car and a power unit — led to a breakthrough. “Formula 1 has maintained a dialogue with General Motors, and its partners at TWG Global,” — which now controls Andretti Global — “regarding the viability of an entry following the commercial assessment and decision made by Formula 1 in January 2024,” F1 said in a statement. “Over the course of this year, they have achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the eleventh team GM/Cadillac, and that GM will enter as an engine supplier at a later time. Formula 1 is therefore pleased to move forward with this application process and will provide further updates in due course.” In a statement, GM said it will build its own power unit “by the end of the decade,” without specifying a year. “F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. It’s an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world’s premier racing series, and we’re committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world,” GM President Mark Reuss said. “This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM’s engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level.” Mario Andretti, a former F1 champion and the patriarch of the Andretti racing dynasty, will serve as a director on the team’s board. “My first love was Formula 1 and now — 70 years later — the F1 paddock is still my happy place. I’m absolutely thrilled with Cadillac, Formula 1, Mark Walter, and Dan Towriss,” Andretti said in a statement. “To still be involved at this stage of my life — I have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming.” Last spring, Andretti paid a visit to Washington, D.C., at the invitation of lawmakers, and the story became political. Within a few months, the Justice Department began investigating Liberty Media for potential antitrust violations amid allegations that it shut out a U.S. team to protect the largely European teams from competition. That probe could fizzle as a result of this move. “If Andretti and GM have worked out a deal to get onto the Formula 1 grid, federal enforcers will probably be able to close their file and focus on other things,” said Daniel Francis, a professor at NYU School of Law and an antitrust expert. “Sometimes the best investigations are the ones that resolve themselves: consumers benefit and the enforcers can deploy their resources elsewhere.” Andretti's son, Michael Andretti, who helmed the team’s initial application to join F1, has been sidelined under the new effort, with investor Dan Towriss taking the reins of Andretti Global and overseeing it. It will be the first time since 2016 that F1 has had more than 10 teams on the grid. One of those existing teams, Haas F1, is owned by American Gene Haas with headquarters in North Carolina. But the team uses a Ferrari engine and is lesser known to American fans. There are two drivers per team, and the addition of the GM-Cadillac seats on the grid will be a welcome development for young drivers. Many have hit roadblocks trying to break into a sport, despite showcasing their talent, as older veterans are staying longer and those who bring sponsorship money gain a leg up. “From a young drivers point of view, I think they would definitely vote to have another team,” RB driver Liam Lawson, who is looking to secure his seat for next season, said in an interview. Some veteran drivers could also be interested in a seat. On Saturday, after the Las Vegas race, NBC News asked outgoing Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas, a 10-time race winner, whether he might be interested in a 2026 seat at Cadillac F1. “Yes. I might,” Bottas replied. The move sets up a clash of two American car giants, GM and Ford, in Formula 1. Ford is partnering with Red Bull to build the team’s power unit starting in 2026. As rumors about the potential deal circulated, it was the talk of the paddock at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. “Ford versus GM could be pretty sexy,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said on Sky Sports F1.

Tulisa Contostavlos has jetted back to the UK following her departure from the I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here! jungle. The 36 year old N-Dubz singer chose to fly back to Britain rather than staying for the hit ITV show's finale. Touching down in Manchester, the ex-X Factor judge used a private airport terminal to dodge the cameras. Since being voted off the show on Monday night, Tulisa has been attracting significant attention. Her spokesperson told the Mirror about her early return while other contestants prepare for this weekend's finale, attributing "welfare reasons" as the cause for her decision. Rumours circulated about a substantial falling-out with her mate Michelle McKenna, but this was dispelled. Read more I'm A Celebrity's GK Barry makes swipe at Danny Jones as she enters hotel after exit Refuting the claims, Tulisa insisted she had "no issue" with Michelle or Daniel Johnson, both of whom flew out to support her during her stint in the jungle, reports the Mirror . On Thursday, a spokesperson for Tulisa clarified: "There has been absolutely no fall out between Tulisa and her best friend Michelle. They haven't argued once since Tulisa left the jungle. Michelle in fact travelled back to London with Tulisa." The spokesperson went on to dismiss the story as a complete fabrication that wasn't even checked by Tulisa's team before it was published. "This story has been completely fabricated and wasn't even sent to Tulisa's team for a chance to comment prior to publication. The decision for Tulisa to return home to the UK was agreed to by the production for welfare reasons." It was previously reported that all campmates typically attend the crowning of the King or Queen of the Jungle. However, a source stated that there is no ill will towards Tulisa for not being present. This comes after Tulisa shared a video message explaining that she felt "a little bit overwhelmed" following her departure from the show. In the video, she addressed removing I'm A Celebrity posts from her Instagram page, which had been managed by Michelle while she was away. Tulisa took to social media with a personal video to set the record straight, saying: "Hey guys. I'm just doing a little video to clear a few things up. When I first came out of the jungle, I felt fine first of all and then that evening, my friends went to bed and I was on my Instagram, just trying to have a casual scroll at some funny stuff." She opened up about feeling overwhelmed after the initial excitement, "I was getting a lot of attention, a lot of bombarding - in all the most positive way, but because it's been a bit of a while for me, I can get overwhelmed quite easily and I just started to feel a little bit overwhelmed. And I was like, do you know what? I need to just take a little bit of time for me and just chill. This is all just feeling a bit much at the moment." Putting her followers in the picture, she continued candidly, "I'm just going to archive all my stuff to do with the jungle and then, when the time is right and I've had time to process, I'm going to make my own reels of my best bits that I really like. Because remember, I haven't been doing my Instagrams. The way it's being posted and all the random stuff is not how I would do my Insta - I would have one or two really good reels relating to the jungle and bringing my time together there." She elaborated on her emotions, stating, "But I just really wanted to clear up the reasons why that I did that and just be honest - it's OK to feel a little bit overwhelmed. I've been out of the spotlight for a long time and I'm still trying to overcome those things, I've got my demons. It doesn't mean I'm going to hide behind a rock for another ten years it just means I need a little bit of time to process it and get right with my thoughts. Thank you to ITV and I'm A Celeb for being really understanding. Mental health is really important and I am super grateful for the love and support that I've had." She further explained, "I've just felt overwhelmed. I'm an introvert, guys - I've been in the jungle with people I'd only just met for two and a half weeks straight and then I've come out and I've received loads and loads of attention and I'm like, 'whoa - this is a lot! ' and I just need a bit of time."West Virginia takes home win streak into matchup with Bethune-CookmanCelebrity Couples Who Split After Decades Together

A video showing a shelter dog, who reportedly has no pending applications for adoption, has gone viral after a volunteer at the Benton Franklin Humane Society posted a video on TikTok of the pup, named Finn, selecting his Christmas gift. Julie Saraceno's video — which was posted earlier this month — has gained 4 million views. The video shows Finn entering the main area of the building with toys strewn about on the floor. Finn, whose tail is wagging happily throughout the entire video, sniffs many of the possible toys and even picks up a few before settling on a green frog as his final choice. Saraceno, a dedicated volunteer since 2020, tells People exclusively, “I love making the dogs feel special while they wait for their forever homes." According to Saraceno, she noticed that there was a demand from people across the country who wanted to help the dogs she talked about on her social media page. Game-changing clothing tool gets rid of Christmas tree needles in seconds Dog behavior expert's 3 breeds to avoid including one 'no-one should consider' “I realized that I have many followers as far away as New York,” she said. “So I created Amazon Wishlists for the longtime dogs so they could have beds, blankets and their favorite toys and treats.” The Washington resident was shocked when donations started pouring in. The clip of Finn selecting the toy is one of several featuring dogs in the shelter selecting their present. According to the worker, Finn is one of several puppies who have no pending applications and hopes to change that by using social media as he’s been at the shelter for more than one year now. “He’s just the sweetest boy,” she writes on TikTok . “He would love to have a home for the holidays.” Since sharing the post, Saraceno has reported an increase in donations with the mailman having to make multiple trips to deliver all the packages. "I love that Finn went viral," she says. "I hope it helps him get a home." Many of Saraceno's followers have also stated Finn gets adopted soon. "That beautiful baby boy deserves a basket FULL of toys — and lots of comfy beds and couches to cuddle on," wrote one person. "Not to be dramatic but I’d die for Finn," stated a second person. "I love how seriously he took that. inspecting each toy carefully, lol," a third person commented. "I hope Finn finds a loving forever home before the holidays!" "There’s a great home out there for you Finn!! Hang in there buddy," a fourth person cooed. "Please keep us updated if he finds a home please he's so sweet I wish I could adopt him," said a fifth person. The remaining comments echoed similar statements of people clamoring over how cute the dog was and how they wished they could adopt the sweet animal. "Love this for the shelter dogs, if I would I would happily take any shelter dog home but I need more land and a giant house." EAM Jaishankar Meets Counterparts Of France, Ukraine, Lebanon, Croatia At Rome Mediterranean DialogueInvestment barriers at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and the Office of the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC) must be addressed immediately to bolster investor confidence and increase investment growth, according to experts and top business leaders. The laws concerned must be amended right away in order to end the culture of bribery and establish corruption-free service organisations, they suggested. "Facilitation of trade and investment must be a priority. A trade and investment commission with active participation from the private sector is required," Ashraf Ahmed, president of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), said while speaking with The Daily Star recently. He added that many reforms could be implemented immediately, such as those that can be initiated through executive orders or require changes in the rules rather than the law. However, some major reforms will require changes to existing laws. So, they will require approval from parliament. According to Ahmed, numerous laws must be updated to reflect changing global circumstances and business needs. This includes the Companies Act 2014, Export Import Control Act 1950, Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1947, Competition Act, Income Tax Act, Customs Act, and VAT Act. Ahmed said amending and updating these laws is required to create a conducive environment for investment. However, many reform opportunities which will not require changes in the law also exist, such as automation of filing procedures for the RJSC, Chief Controller of Import and Export or customs. Mohammed Amirul Haque, managing director of Premier Cement Mills, stressed the need for a platform that will focus on trade and investment as well as address problems and bottlenecks faced by entrepreneurs. He alleged that the inconsistent policy governing the adjustable advance income tax of investors was discouraging investment by increasing the business cost by around 10 percent. Haque added that entrepreneurs would have to keep a 35 percent profit margin to sustain the businesses in line with the existing income tax law. This type of bottleneck indirectly encourages the siphoning of money, he alleged. Asif Ibrahim, former president of DCCI, said the business community hopes the burning issues in the private sector of Bangladesh will now get due priority from the interim government. Ashik Chowdhury, executive chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (Bida), said he met over 300 chief executive officers over the past 50 days to identify the challenges faced by businesses and was focusing on addressing the barriers. "Basically, I am doing this to bring necessary changes and reforms to create a business-friendly environment," he said. According to Chowdhury, everybody acknowledges that corruption occurs at the NBR, posing a major obstacle to doing business transparently and smoothly. Zaved Akhter, president of the Foreign Investors' Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), said although no reform commission has been formed regarding investment, all the reforms that have been taken will ultimately support investment and business. Bangladesh is the only country in the world where investors raise capital for investment from the money market, he said, while investors in other countries raise capital from the stock market. Reforms are needed in this area, he suggested. However, he said initiatives taken to change the structure of the stock market would undoubtedly support the investment. Investment reforms should come mainly from the Bida, where everything can be done under one umbrella, he said, adding: "If the initiatives taken by the BIDA can be implemented, the confidence of investors will increase." He added: "I am extremely confident that these changes will help create an environment for doing business." Mohammad Hatem, president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said a zero-tolerance policy must be formulated immediately and implemented to improve the state of law and order. Additionally, he advocated for trade associations to be free of politics. M Masrur Reaz, chairman and chief executive officer of the Policy Exchange of Bangladesh, said think tanks have already conducted a lot of research on how to build an investment-friendly environment and attract FDI. "All the barriers have been detected. We just need the Bida or another high-powered government entity to address the issues by implementing the recommendations," he said. In order to boost the confidence of foreign investors, he emphasised the importance of improving the ease of doing business.Marilyn J. Lopez
