Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expanded his 14-member coalition ministry in a tactical move ahead of the assembly elections due in 16 months. Sarma, following deliberations with BJP national president JP Nadda and union home minister Amit Shah in Mumbai on Thursday, announced on X that four of his colleagues _Prasanta Phukan, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul and Rupesh Goala _ shall be inducted as ministers in the cabinet on Saturday. All four are newcomers and from the BJP. Sarma was in Mumbai to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Maharashtra’s new chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputy Eknath Shinde. With these four inclusions, BJP’s share in the council of ministers will increase by two from its earlier strength of 13, including the chief minister, whilst that of ally AGP remains unchanged with two berths and UPPL’s one. Hours before Sarma’s announcement, his labour welfare and tea tribe welfare minister Sanjay Kishan tendered his resignation. Kishan, who departed for New Delhi earlier in the day, said he was resigning in accordance with the chief minister’s wishes, having pledged to honour whatever decision the CM and the party makes. Earlier in April, another cabinet minister, Parimal Suklabaidya relinquished his ministerial position following his election to Lok Sabha. Devendra Fadnavis's rehabilitation as CM appears imminent, with Eknath Shinde potentially as his deputy, fostering unity. While Shinde has expressed deference to Modi and Shah, BJP seeks to ensure his valued role. However, some speculate Shinde may decline the deputy CM position, preferring a ministerial portfolio within Maharashtra. North Carolina has interviewed former New England Patriots coach and six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick for its head coaching position, two people with knowledge of the situation said Thursday. Both people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school isn't commenting publicly on its search. Belichick's interview, first reported by Inside Carolina, comes a week after the school fired its winningest coach in College Football Hall of Famer Mack Brown. The school announced Nov. 26 that Brown wouldn't return for a seventh season in his second stint at the school, with Brown staying on to coach last weekend's rivalry loss to N.C. State. Former Cleveland Browns coach Freddie Kitchens is working as the interim coach for an upcoming bowl game as UNC conducts it search. Moving on from the 73-year-old Brown to hire the 72-year-old Belichick would mean UNC is turning to a coach who has never worked at the college level, yet had incredible NFL success alongside quarterback Tom Brady throughout most of his 24-year tenure with the Patriots that ended last season . In the time since, he had been linked to NFL jobs , notably the Atlanta Falcons in January. UNC’s opening comes at a time of rapid changes in college athletics with free player movement through the transfer portal and players able to cash in on their athletic fame with endorsement opportunities. There’s also the impending arrival of revenue sharing, part of a $2.8 billion antitrust settlement proposal that gained preliminary approval by a judge in October. “I think it's a great time for me to get out,” Brown said after Saturday's loss to the Wolfpack. “This isn't the game that I signed up for. It's changed so much.” In an UNC-produced podcast earlier this week, athletic director Bubba Cunningham said all the coaches the school is talking with about its job “are playing,” with college football having reached its conference title games before unveiling the 12-team College Football Playoff and bowl assignments. Cunningham said then that “fit” was the most important thing in finding Brown’s successor. “There's a certain person that’s best suited at the right time, at the right place,” he said. “And right now, that’s we’re looking for: Where are we today, who can lead us in the next three, five, 10 years?” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Jasleen Kaur was awarded the 25,000-pound ($32,000) prize by actor James Norton at the Tate Britain gallery in London. Kaur used her acceptance speech to express support for scores of demonstrators outside. She is among signatories to a letter demanding Tate, which runs several major British art museums, cut ties with donors who are linked to Israel over its war in Gaza. “This is not a radical demand,” Kaur said. “This should not risk an artist’s career or safety. “We need a proper ceasefire now,” she said. The Israel-Hamas war has killed more than 43,000 Palestinians, according to Hamas health officials in Gaza. Israel launched the war in response to the militant group's Oct. 7, 2023 cross-border attack that killed some 1,200 Israelis and took more than 250 hostage. A jury led by Tate Britain director Alex Farquhar praised the way 38-year-old Kaur “weaves together the personal, political and spiritual” through “unexpected and playful combinations of material.” Her winning exhibition mixes sculpture, print, everyday items — including family photos, a Ford Escort car and the popular Scottish soda Irn Bru — and immersive music to reflect on her upbringing in Glasgow’s Sikh community. Three other finalists – Pio Abad, Claudette Johnson and Delaine Le Bas – received 10,000 pounds ($12,670) each. Named for 19th-century landscape painter J.M.W. Turner and founded in 1984 to reward young artists, the prize helped make stars of shark-pickling artist Damien Hirst, potter Grayson Perry, sculptor Anish Kapoor and filmmaker Steve McQueen . But it has also been criticized for rewarding impenetrable conceptual work and often sparks debate about the value of modern art, with winners such as Hirst’s "Mother and Child Divided,” which consists of two cows, bisected and preserved in formaldehyde, and Martin Creed’s “Lights On and Off” -- a room with a light blinking on and off – drawing scorn from sections of the media. In 2019, all four finalists were declared winners after they refused to compete against one another, “to make a collective statement in the name of commonality, multiplicity and solidarity.” In 2021, all five finalists were collectives rather than individual artists. The award was initially open to artists under 50 but now has no upper age limit. Works by the four finalists are on display until Feb. 16.

Cork U21A HC: Newcestown 2-11 Valley Rovers 2-10 Newcestown are into the last four of the Co-Op Superstores Cork U21A HC, this hard-fought single point victory saw them edge past Valley Rovers at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh 4G on Tuesday night. The impressive free-taking of Richard O’Sullivan was a factor, including a magnificent 58th minute strike from a difficult angle way out in his own half-back line that proved to be the winning score. There was still time for more drama as the contest ended in huge excitement. The tension was palpable as Valley Rovers ‘keeper Aaron White bravely saved a penalty, not once but twice, in the 60th minute from O'Sullivan - referee Mark Maher made it be retaken after an infringement - however despite the let off, the Innishannon side couldn’t find an equaliser in this derby tie where many of the players know each other so well as they go to school in Bandon. In the end, Valley Rovers were left heartbroken, disappointed they didn’t force extra time after they won a free deep in stoppage but Evan O’Shea opted to go short and it didn’t work out. O’Shea had already nailed four from placed balls. Valley Rovers were involved in an epic Carrigdhoun final on Sunday but there was no sign of tiredness following their penalty shoot-out win over Ballymartle. They went straight into the action and had 1-4 on the board by the 12th minute - the goal from Joe Twohig in the first minute after Ronan McSweeney had stopped the initial effort from Harry O’Sullivan. Twohig had the sliotar in the net again five minutes later but the goal was disallowed for a foul on McSweeney. Valleys added four points before Newcestown, who hadn’t been competitive since winning the Carbery final on October 27, opened their scoring through a Ciarán O’Donovan goal. By half-time, they had worked their way back and drew level 1-5 apiece. Newcestown then took the game to their opponents when O’Sullivan netted four minutes after the restart. A second Twohig green flag in the 47th minute swung the momentum back Valley Rovers’ way, 2-10 to 2-8. Newcestown closed with the final three points - O’Sullivan’s sixth point proved to be the decider. Login or signup to continue reading Emergency services were called to the Speers Point administration building at 3.47am on Wednesday November 27 after an alarm was triggered. On arrival, teams discovered smoke coming from the building and fire crews were forced to make entry to figure out where the smoke was coming from. Crews quickly called for back up, as the fire was discovered on the ground floor of the building, with a secondary site of concern on level one. There were 15 trucks on scene and teams managed to gain control of the fire by 5.15am. The site is now being monitored and ventilated. Fire investigators have been called in to find out what ignited the blaze. The building was empty at the time and no one was injured. "We will work closely with NSW Fire & Rescue to determine the cause of the fire and assess damage to the building," Council CEO Morven Cameron said. "We've asked all administrative centre staff to work from home today. Unfortunately, the centre will be closed for the time being for walk-in customers." Council's Customer Service hotline (4921 0333) is currently out of action, but Ms Cameron said back-up arrangements were under way to get it back online. "We will do everything we can to get the building and our Customer Service hotline reopened quickly," Ms Cameron said. "We're grateful to emergency services who attended the scene and thank the community for their patience." No chance for the 49ers on Sunday in Green Bay? “We’re missing two good players definitely but we’ll have a lot of good players out there,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan countered. “By no means do we not have a chance to win. We’ll fight our tails off. We’ll expect a real good game.” will force him to miss his first game due to injury since becoming the 49ers’ starting quarterback nearly two years ago, and that thrusts ninth-year journeyman Brandon Allen into his 10th career start and first since 2021 with Cincinnati. Bosa’s oblique and hip injuries will sideline him for his first game of this wobbly season. Also ruled out were cornerback Charvarius Ward (personal), return specialist Jacob Cowing (concussion), defensive tackle Kevin Givens (groin) and linebacker Tatum Bethune (knee), while left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) is questionable as a game-time decision for a second straight game. Tight end George Kittle (hamstring) and running back Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) are good to go for an offense that must make do without Purdy at the NFL’s most historic venue. Allen, who last threw a regular-season pass in 2022 as Joe Burrow’s backup in Cincinnati, will guide the 49ers’ offense in a key game as San Francisco aims to make a playoff push. “It’s an opportunity,” Allen said. “The circumstances are what they are. Our team all year long, we’ve been dealing with injuries here or there. It’s been a big next-man-up mentality. It’s definitely an opportunity for me to go out, play well, put our guys in a good position to win the game. “Obviously we want Brock back and healthy and all that,” Allen added. “For the time being, it is an opportunity for me.” Josh Dobbs, who lost out to Allen in training camp and the preseason for the QB2 role, will serve in that capacity Sunday at Lambeau Field, where neither quarterback has played a regular-season game. Rookie Tanner Mordecai likely will be elevated from the practice squad Saturday to serve as the emergency No. 3 quarterback. Purdy wore a resigned, dour expression but offered upbeat words as he walked through the locker room, saying: “We’re all good.” This is not how Shanahan scripted it earlier in the week. “(Purdy) got the MRI on Monday, we thought he just needed some rest and really weren’t concerned about not being there this week,” Shanahan said Friday. “I don’t want to say there’s long-term concern,” Shanahan said Friday. “We got the MRI on Monday. We thought he just needed some rest and really weren’t concerned about him not being good this week.” Purdy rested his arm Wednesday, then left the practice field Thursday after a few light throws. “It surprised him, surprised us how it felt, so we had to shut him down,” Shanahan said. “The MRI doesn’t look like (it’s serious) so it should be alright. But the way it responded this week, it’s really up in the air for next week. We’ll have to see on Monday.” The 49ers follow this week’s trip at Green Bay with a prime-time appearance next Sunday, Dec. 1 in Buffalo. “I know this is like the first time Brock’s missed a game probably in his life,” Allen said. “He’s a tough guy and I’m not too worried about it. I don’t think any of our guys are. He’ll rehab and get back as fast as he can.” No one is saying when Purdy got hurt in Sunday’s 20-17 loss to Seattle, whether it was from diving for the goal line on his first-quarter touchdown scramble or later in the game. Shanahan did note that Purdy struggled to keep his shoulder loose and threw on the sideline, then the pain intensified after the game and into Monday. “It was somewhere during that Seattle game and I’m not sure Brock knows,” general manager John Lynch said on KNBR. “He fought through it through the course of the game. I did see him during the course of the game, anytime there was a pause, he kept throwing. At that point, you’re feeling something but he was so focused on trying to win.” Shanahan lauded Allen as a “really good thrower” who “runs our offense well” and that “guys believe in him.” The feeling is mutual on Allen’s side, as he explained what it was like as Purdy’s stand-in on the starting unit in practice this week: “It’s been a blessing to have them in the huddle with me and the leadership that’s in the huddle, so I can just come in and fill the spot for Brock for now, just try to make some plays and get the ball in their hands.” Added Shanahan: “It’s not a big game-plan adjustment. This is something we didn’t think would happen early in the week. We were fully preparing for Brock to go.” The Packers prepared that way, too. Allen is no total stranger, however. Packers coach Matt LaFleur told reporters Friday in Green Bay, prior to Purdy’s no-show practice: “I know Brandon. I was with him in L.A. (in 2017). He’s been in the league a long time. But I wouldn’t expect their offense to change a whole bunch.” While Purdy traveled with the 49ers to Green Bay, Bosa was staying behind to rehabilitate the upper-body injuries that forced him to miss Sunday’s fourth-quarter collapse against Seattle. It will be the first game Bosa has missed since Oct. 16, 2022 with a groin injury. The 49ers lost a road game that day to Atlanta 28-14 during a season in which Bosa was the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year. Sam Okuayinonu figures to make his first career start in place of Bosa while Leonard Floyd makes his 11th start at the other defensive end slot. Williams, with the help of a pain-killing injection, made it through the Seattle loss at what he said afterwards was 65 percent. Although listed as questionable, Shanahan reiterated Williams’ status could go right up to kickoff. Jaylon Moore likely would start in place of Williams, if needed. Ward, mourning the death of his 23-month-old daughter, was declared out but Shanahan hoped to have the All-Pro cornerback next week when the 49ers visit Buffalo. “He’s taken three full weeks off,” Shanahan said. “It’s not like dealing with all that stuff he’s getting workouts in and all that. We’re just happy to get him back in the building this week. We don’t want to put any pressure on him, hopefully he’ll be good to go next week.” Among those listed as questionable is guard/center Jon Feliciano, whose 21-day window of practicing while on injured reserve is about to expire. If the 49ers don’t put Feliciano on the 53-man roster by Monday, he’ll spend the rest of the season on injured reserve. Cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) was ruled out after being unable to practice all week, and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring) also will not suit up for Green Bay’s defense. Defensive tackle Colby Wooden is questionable as the only other Packers player on their injury report.
