So much so that F1 and Formula One Management could have a decision to grant the General Motors-backed entry a spot as the 11th team on the grid in the coming weeks. Dan Towriss, now the majority owner of the Andretti organization, was at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Thursday scoping his chances of entering the top motorsports series in the world. So was the FBI, allegedly, as part of a Department of Justice investigation into why F1 denied the Andretti organization expansion into the series. F1 currently has 10 teams that field 20 cars and only one — the organization owned by California businessman Gene Haas — is an American team. Las Vegas marks the third race this season in the United States, more than any other country, as F1 has exploded in American popularity over the last five years. Even so, Andretti could not get approval from F1 to enter the series. But, the situation changed in September when Andretti scaled back his role with his namesake organization. Now with Towriss in charge, talks have amplified, even though it is not clear what the name of an Andretti-less F1 team would even be. Cadillac would do the engines — but says it won't be ready until 2028 — which means a 2026 Towriss-led F1 team would be GM branded but with a partner engine supplier. Most of the existing teams have been largely opposed to an 11th team entering F1, citing a dilution in prize money and the massive expenses they've already committed to the series. But, Andretti among others believed the teams' position was personal in that they simply didn't like Andretti, who ran 13 races in the 1993 season. His father, Mario, is the 1978 F1 world champion. The Andretti application had already been approved by the FIA, which is F1's ruling body, but later denied by F1 itself. F1 promised to revisit the issue once General Motors had an engine ready to compete. The existing 10 F1 teams have no actual vote or say in if the grid is expanded, which Mercedes boss Toto Wolff reiterated Thursday when The Associated Press asked why the sudden chance of acceptance in a potential 11th team. "We have an obligation, a statutory obligation as directors, to present the standpoint that is the best for our company and for our employees, and we've done that," Wolff said. "I think if a team can add to the championship, particularly if GM decides to come in as a team owner, that is a different story. "And as long as it is creative, that means we're growing the popularity of the sport, we're growing the revenue of the sport, then no team will be ever against it. So I'm putting my hope in there." NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A scruffy little fugitive is on the lam again in New Orleans, gaining fame as he outwits a tenacious band of citizens armed with night-vision binoculars, nets and a tranquilizer rifle. Scrim, a 17-pound mutt that's mostly terrier, has become a folk hero, inspiring tattoos, t-shirts and even a ballad as he eludes capture from the posse of volunteers. And like any antihero, Scrim has a backstory: Rescued from semi-feral life at a trailer park and adopted from a shelter, the dog broke loose in April and scurried around the city until he was cornered in October and brought to a new home. Weeks later, he'd had enough. Scrim leaped out of a second-story window, a desperate act recorded in a now-viral video. Since then, despite a stream of daily sightings, he's roamed free. The dog’s fans include Myra and Steve Foster, who wrote “Ode to Scrim” to the tune of Ricky Nelson’s 1961 hit, “I’m a Travelin’ Man.” Leading the recapture effort is Michelle Cheramie, a 55-year-old former information technology professional. She lost everything — home, car, possessions — in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and in the aftermath, found her calling rescuing pets. “I was like, ‘This is what I should be doing,’” Cheramie said. “I was born to rescue.” She launched Zeus’ Rescues, a nonprofit shelter that now averages 600 cat and dog adoptions a year and offers free pet food to anyone who needs it. She helped Scrim find the home he first escaped from. It was Cheramie's window Scrim leaped from in November. She's resumed her relentless mission since then, posting flyers on telephone poles and logging social media updates on his reported whereabouts. She's invested thousands of dollars on wildlife cameras, thermal sensors and other gear. She took a course offered by the San Diego Zoo on the finer points of tranquilizing animals. And she's developed a network of volunteers — the kind of neighbors who are willing to grid-search a city at 3 a.m. People like writer David W. Brown, who manages a crowd-sourced Google Map of all known Scrim sightings. He says the search has galvanized residents from all walks of life to come together. As they search for Scrim, they hand out supplies to people in need. "Being a member of the community is seeing problems and doing what you can to make life a little better for the people around here and the animals around you," Brown said. And neighbors like Tammy Murray, who had to close her furniture store and lost her father to Parkinson's Disease. This search, she says, got her mojo back. “Literally, for months, I’ve done nothing but hunt this dog,” said Murray, 53. “I feel like Wile E. Coyote on a daily basis with him.” Murray drives the Zeus' Rescues' van towards reported Scrim sightings. She also handles a tactical net launcher, which looks like an oversized flashlight and once misfired, shattering the van's window as Scrim sped away. After realizing Scrim had come to recognize the sound of the van's diesel engine, Murray switched to a Vespa scooter, for stealth. Near-misses have been tantalizing. The search party spotted Scrim napping beneath an elevated house, and wrapped construction netting around the perimeter, but an over-eager volunteer broke ranks and dashed forward, leaving an opening Scrim slipped through. Scrim's repeated escapades have prompted near-daily local media coverage and a devoted online following. Cheramie can relate. “We’re all running from something or to something. He's doing that too,” she said. Cheramie's team dreams of placing the pooch in a safe and loving environment. But a social media chorus growing under the hashtag #FreeScrim has other ideas — they say the runaway should be allowed a life of self-determination. The animal rescue volunteers consider that misguided. “The streets of New Orleans are not the place for a dog to be free,” Cheramie said. “It’s too dangerous.” Scrim was a mess when Cheramie briefly recaptured him in October, with matted fur, missing teeth and a tattered ear. His trembling body was scraped and bruised, and punctured by multiple projectiles. A vet removed one, but decided against operating to take out a possible bullet. The dog initially appeared content indoors, sitting in Cheramie's lap or napping beside her bed. Then while she was out one day, Scrim chewed through a mesh screen, dropped 13 feet to the ground and squeezed through a gap in the fence, trotting away. Murray said Cheramie's four cats probably spooked him. “I wholeheartedly believe the gangster-ass cats were messing with him,” Murray said. Cheramie thinks they may have gotten territorial. Devastated but undeterred, the pair is reassessing where Scrim might fit best — maybe a secure animal sanctuary with big outdoor spaces where other dogs can keep him company. The CDC’s warning said carfentanil has “reemerged in the U.S. drug supply” and cited the CDC’s State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System data. Bryce Underwood, who is the No. 1 overall recruit for the class of 2025, has announced his commitment to the Wolverines. Underwood, who is from Belleville, Mich., had previously been committed to LSU, but the quarterback changed his commitment. Portnoy, who is a Michigan alumnist and fan of the Wolverines, had previously indicated he was prepared to spend millions of dollars to bring his school a top quarterback. (AP) — John Elway says any remorse over in the 2018 NFL draft is quickly dissipating with rookie suggesting the Denver Broncos have finally found their next franchise quarterback. It's been five years since Elway announced he was dealing with Dupuytren’s contracture, a chronic condition that typically appears after age 40 and causes one or more fingers to permanently bend toward the palm. Elway's ring fingers on both hands were originally affected and he said now the middle finger on his right hand is starting to pull forward. So, he’ll get another injection of a drug called Xiaflex, which is the only FDA-approved non-surgical treatment, one that he's endorsing in an awareness campaign for the chronic condition that affects 17 million Americans. The condition can make it difficult to do everyday tasks such as shaking hands or picking up a coffee mug. Born in a bathroom Like some of the greatest brands today, PA started with humble beginnings, “Parametric Architecture was born in a toilet,” Hamid recollected. In 2016, he worked as an architect in Istanbul, Turkey. At that time, Hamid was experimenting with tools like Rhino and Grasshopper to integrate visual scripting into architectural workflows. These experiments ignited a passion for parametric design, inspiring him to create an Instagram page to share his projects. “I signed out of my account, created a new one called Parametric Architecture, and uploaded my first logo in Photoshop. That’s how it all started,” he added. What began as a small page showcasing his work quickly gained traction. “In just one hour, a video I posted got 2,000 views, and I only had 20 followers,” he recalls. Encouraged by the response, Hamid committed to sharing one project each week. Within seven months, the page had amassed 10,000 followers. Designed for designers Initially focused on sharing his work, Hamid soon expanded the platform to feature other designers and their projects. “After seven months, I thought, maybe it’s better to share other designers’ works as well—not to be selfish,” he says. This shift broadened the platform’s scope and opened Hamid’s eyes to the vast possibilities of parametric design. “I got to know more architects, more designs. My eyes opened widely to the world,” he told us. By 2020, Parametric Architecture had grown to over 500,000 followers. During the pandemic, Hamid transformed his side hustle into a full-fledged business. “We started a website, Twitter, LinkedIn, and invited architects to discuss the emergence of these tools in architecture. The platform skyrocketed,” he explained. What is parametric design? For those unfamiliar with the term, parametric design can seem daunting. Hamid breaks it down: “Parametric design uses algorithms, relationships, and coding to calculate forms, spaces, and designs. It’s about using data-driven tools to create optimized models and iterate thousands of designs by changing just one parameter.” He credits the 2007 launch of Grasshopper 3D as a pivotal moment. “Grasshopper opened the floodgates for architects to use visual scripting directly. Before that, coding wasn’t practical for architects. Grasshopper made it accessible,” he added. Bridging gaps between architects and engineers Hamid is passionate about parametric tools, particularly their ability to connect architects and engineers. “Now architects can speak the language of engineers,” he explains. “They can optimize their models faster and adapt to the needs of structural and electrical engineers in real-time. This collaboration has made design environments more cohesive,” he added. Tools like Grasshopper and Rhino and artificial intelligence (AI) advancements have revolutionized workflows. “The beauty of these tools is that you can iterate endlessly. Change one parameter, and the entire design updates in real time,” he says. This iterative approach saves time and fosters creativity. Community building at its heart One of the most significant contributions of Parametric Architecture has been the development of a global community. “We are democratizing knowledge,” Hamid told us. “We’re making advanced design tools and computational techniques accessible to everyone, from students to professionals,” he added. Through initiatives like PA Talks and PA Academy , the platform has become a hub for learning and inspiration. “PA Talks started in 2018 to give architects a voice,” Hamid explains. “We’ve hosted legends like Peter Eisenman, who joined a live session on Instagram at 90. It was surreal,” he added. PA Academy, launched in 2022, focuses on teaching cutting-edge tools like AI and parametric design. “We want to make this knowledge accessible and affordable,” Hamid says. “You shouldn’t have to pay $50,000 for a master’s degree to learn these skills,” he said. AI in architecture The rise of AI has been a game-changer for the architectural field. “AI tools like MidJourney and ComfyUI are merging parametric design with artificial intelligence, giving architects unprecedented control over their designs,” Hamid notes. “You can type a prompt and explore multiple design options instantly,” he added. Despite the hype around AI, Hamid is quick to clarify its role. “Architecture is not just image generation. It’s a combination of design, materials, engineering, and context. AI is just one tool in a much larger process,” Hamid added. Sustainability to its core Parametric design has profound implications for sustainability. “By reducing the use of concrete through advanced geometries, we’re contributing to a more sustainable future,” Hamid emphasizes. He also sees a bright future for 3D printing in construction: “In the next 10 years, we might see multi-material 3D printers constructing entire buildings, from concrete walls to timber features.” This innovation extends beyond Earth. “Imagine robots building shelters on other planets before humans arrive. 3D printing could make this a reality,” he predicts. Architecture is not for the faint-hearted Despite its advancements, architecture remains a tough profession. “Architects often work long hours for low pay,” Hamid says candidly. “They design projects before getting funded, making it hard to sustain offices and teams,” he said. He hopes platforms like PA can help. “By providing resources and education, we aim to empower architects to be more efficient and adapt to new technologies,” he says. The road ahead As PA continues to grow, Hamid remains focused on accessibility. “We want to lower costs, expand workshops, and collaborate with universities to make advanced tools available to everyone,” he explained. His ultimate goal? “To create a more efficient and sustainable built environment. With the right tools, architects can design better buildings and improve the entire construction process,” he concluded.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren and six other Democratic lawmakers are pressing for answers from Mehmet Oz, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to oversee the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Their concerns have to do with his proposal to privatize Medicare and conflicts of interest if confirmed to lead the health organization overseeing the health care of more than 12 million Americans. A letter , signed by Democrats and sent on Tuesday, highlights “stark concerns” about Oz's financial ties of stocks of “at least $550,000 invested in UnitedHealth Group, the largest private insurer in Medicare Advantage.” This would mean “under Dr. Oz’s plan, UnitedHealth Group’s revenue from Medicare Advantage would roughly double to $274 billion annually.” In addition to Warren, it was cosigned by Sen. Ron Wyden, Rep. Lloyd Doggett, Sen. Jeff Merkley, Sen. Dick Durbin, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, and Sen. Ben Cardin. The Democratic lawmakers referred to a 2020 Forbes op-ed cowritten by Oz that called for switching Americans into the privatized Medicare Advantage, replacing the traditional Medicare program that insures elderly, low-income, and disabled Americans. “Dr. Oz outlined his vision for the Medicare program, in which he advocated to eliminate Traditional Medicare and instead lean on private insurers that run Medicare Advantage, a private health care program that drastically overcharges for care.” Oz, a celebrity doctor and TV host, was nominated by Trump on Nov. 19. He had previously been criticized for conflicts of interest when he pushed the debunked COVID-19 treatment hydroxychloroquine early on in the pandemic — a medication in which he owns stock. Oz ran a failed Pennsylvania Senate campaign in 2022, during which more than 100 doctors slammed the Republican candidate for “lying to the American people about medicine.” He was also infamously mocked for not knowing his way around a local grocery store. In 2014, British Medical Journal research found pseudoscience was being promoted on his talk show, “The Dr. Oz Show.” All the while, Oz was making steep profits from the “health” products, advertisements, and weight-loss supplements he promoted on the national show. Oz fits in nicely with Trump’s crappy Cabinet cohort. Trump has a knack for nominating unqualified billionaires, D-list reality TV contestants, snake-oil quacks , and anti-science conmen set on making irresponsible health care decisions. However, Democrats look like they are at least putting up a fight by pointing out they don’t support this Cabinet of clowns. Their tactics, according to CNN , are a different approach from Trump’s first term. Now, Democrats are looking to implement a deliberate and disciplined strategy in Trump’s second term: pointing out the places where they could work with a nominee when they see fit and forcing Republicans to defend Trump’s picks when a nominee faces ethics questions, has a history of controversial statements or doesn’t have what Democrats view as the necessary qualifications for the job. Criticizing a post from Krishnan where he advocated the removal of country caps for green cards, Loomer called the appointment "deeply disturbing," prompting an online battle between the business leaders who say the work visas are essential to employing high-qualified foreign workers and Trump supporters who argued it was a way for business leaders to have cheap labor rather than provide job opportunities for Americans. Both Ramaswamy and Musk made numerous posts on X claiming H-1B visas are essential because American culture doesn't prioritize success in science and engineering careers compared to other countries. "Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn't start in college, it starts YOUNG," Ramaswamy posted on X. While she and others have accused Musk and Ramaswamy of hindering Trump's aggressive immigration proposals, the business leaders have argued that any such reforms would not hinder the program's extensive vetting process. In June, David Sacks, who will be the president-elect's AI and crypto czar, interviewed Trump for his "All In" podcast and asked Trump if he would expand H-1B work visas for tech workers after fixing the border -- to which Trump said "yes." In that same episode, Trump also promised to award all international graduates with green cards, saying, "I want to do, and what I will do, is you graduate from a college, I think you should get, automatically as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country. That includes junior colleges, too." His campaign later walked back that promise, saying there would be a vetting process. "He believes, only after such vetting has taken place, we ought to keep the most skilled graduates who can make significant contributions to America," Karoline Leavitt, incoming White House press secretary, said in a statement to ABC News at the time. There were his belittling nicknames for political opponents, his impressions of other political figures and the plentiful memes he shared on social media. Now that’s he’s preparing to return to the Oval Office, Trump is back at it, and his trolling is attracting more attention — and eyerolls. On Sunday, Trump turned a photo of himself seated near a smiling first lady Jill Biden at the Notre Dame ceremony into a social media promo for his new perfume and cologne line, with the tag line, “A fragrance your enemies can’t resist!” The first lady’s office declined to comment. When Trudeau hastily flew to Florida to meet with Trump last month over the president-elect’s threat to impose a 25% tax on all Canadian products entering the U.S., the Republican tossed out the idea that Canada become the 51st U.S. state. The Canadians passed off the comment as a joke, but Trump has continued to play up the dig, including in a post Tuesday morning on his social media network referring to the prime minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.” After decades as an entertainer and tabloid fixture, Trump has a flair for the provocative that is aimed at attracting attention and, in his most recent incarnation as a politician, mobilizing fans. He has long relished poking at his opponents, both to demean and minimize them and to delight supporters who share his irreverent comments and posts widely online and cheer for them in person. Trump, to the joy of his fans, first publicly needled Canada on his social media network a week ago when he posted an AI-generated image that showed him standing on a mountain with a Canadian flag next to him and the caption “Oh Canada!” After his latest post, Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Tuesday: “It sounds like we’re living in a episode of South Park.” Trudeau said earlier this week that when it comes to Trump, “his approach will often be to challenge people, to destabilize a negotiating partner, to offer uncertainty and even sometimes a bit of chaos into the well established hallways of democracies and institutions and one of the most important things for us to do is not to freak out, not to panic.” Even Thanksgiving dinner isn’t a trolling-free zone for Trump’s adversaries. On Thanksgiving Day, Trump posted a movie clip from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” with President Joe Biden and other Democrats’ faces superimposed on the characters in a spoof of the turkey-carving scene. The video shows Trump appearing to explode out of the turkey in a swirl of purple sparks, with the former president stiffly dancing to one of his favorite songs, Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” In his most recent presidential campaign, Trump mocked Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, refusing to call his GOP primary opponent by his real name and instead dubbing him “Ron DeSanctimonious.” He added, for good measure, in a post on his Truth Social network: “I will never call Ron DeSanctimonious ‘Meatball’ Ron, as the Fake News is insisting I will.” As he campaigned against Biden, Trump taunted him in online posts and with comments and impressions at his rallies, deriding the president over his intellect, his walk, his golf game and even his beach body. After Vice President Kamala Harris took over Biden’s spot as the Democratic nominee, Trump repeatedly suggested she never worked at McDonalds while in college. Trump, true to form, turned his mocking into a spectacle by appearing at a Pennsylvania McDonalds in October, when he manned the fries station and held an impromptu news conference from the restaurant drive-thru. Trump’s team thinks people should get a sense of humor. “President Trump is a master at messaging and he’s always relatable to the average person, whereas many media members take themselves too seriously and have no concept of anything else other than suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome,” said Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director. “President Trump will Make America Great Again and we are getting back to a sense of optimism after a tumultuous four years.” Though both the Biden and Harris campaigns created and shared memes and launched other stunts to respond to Trump’s taunts, so far America’s neighbors to the north are not taking the bait. “I don’t think we should necessarily look on Truth Social for public policy,” Miller said. Gerald Butts, a former top adviser to Trudeau and a close friend, said Trump brought up the 51st state line to Trudeau repeatedly during Trump’s first term in office. “Oh God,” Butts said Tuesday, “At least a half dozen times.” “This is who he is and what he does. He’s trying to destabilize everybody and make people anxious,” Butts said. “He’s trying to get people on the defensive and anxious and therefore willing to do things they wouldn’t otherwise entertain if they had their wits about them. Instead, McConkey set Chargers rookie records for receptions and receiving yards in a season Saturday. He caught eight passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his season totals to 77 receptions and 1,054 receiving yards, breaking Keenan Allen’s marks of 71 catches and 1,046 yards in 2013. McConkey is one touchdown shy of Allen’s rookie record of eight. When the Chargers jettisoned Allen and Mike Williams in a pair of cost-saving moves during the offseason, new General Manager Joe Hortiz had the notion of selecting a standout wide receiver near the top of his to-do list going into the draft. Hortiz picked right tackle Joe Alt with his first-round pick . Hortiz then made what seemed at the time like a minor move. He swapped his second-round pick for the Patriots’ second-round selection, moving up from 37th to 34th to take McConkey , a standout from the University of Georgia. Hortiz added the 137th overall pick as a sweetener to complete the trade. So, it was that McConkey torched the team that ended up trading him. “No extra motivation or anything like that,” McConkey said, laughing when asked about facing the Patriots for the first time since the draft back in April. “I was excited to get drafted.
