and the might have been hoping for a more relaxed Black Friday game against the Las Vegas Raiders, though in the end they held on for a dramatic win. The game looked set to be decided on the last play of the game as the Raiders marched into Chiefs territory knowing that a field goal would win it for them. However disaster struck with 15 seconds left on the clock. A botched snap for the Raiders allowed the Chiefs to recover the ball and hold on for a and clinch a 10th consecutive season with playoff football. Raiders quarterback took responsibility for the mix up after the game, while Chiefs radio announcer couldn't believe what he saw: "Who is writing these scripts? are blushing." It isn't the first time the Chiefs have been involved in a dramatic game en route to their 11-1 record. They held on for nail-biting wins over the Bengals, Ravens and Broncos while they needed overtime to defeat the Buccaneers. Some fans can't believe Chiefs' luck While the Chiefs have shown an ability to keep their nerve in close games, some fans on social media believe there is something more nefarious at play. "NFL is rigged. There's no way this s*** keeps happening every week for the Chiefs. They ," one fan wrote. Another added: "I ain't big on conspiracy theories but this league is so rigged for and the Chiefs." A third wrote: "Do better, @NFL. The USS Zumwalt is at a Mississippi shipyard where workers have installed missile tubes that replace twin turrets from a gun system that was never activated because it was too expensive. Once the system is complete, the Zumwalt will provide a platform for conducting fast, precision strikes from greater distances, adding to the usefulness of the warship. “It was a costly blunder. But the Navy could take victory from the jaws of defeat here, and get some utility out of (the ships) by making them into a hypersonic platform,” said Bryan Clark, a defence analyst at the Hudson Institute. The US has had several types of hypersonic weapons in development for the past two decades, but recent tests by both Russia and China have added pressure to the US military to hasten their production. Hypersonic weapons travel beyond Mach 5, five times the speed of sound, with added manoeuvrability making them harder to shoot down. Last year, The Washington Post newspaper reported that among the documents leaked by former Massachusetts Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira was a defence department briefing that confirmed China had recently tested an intermediate-range hypersonic weapon called the DF-27. While the Pentagon had previously acknowledged the weapon’s development, it had not recognised its testing. One of the US programmes in development and planned for the Zumwalt is the Conventional Prompt Strike. It would launch like a ballistic missile and then release a hypersonic glide vehicle that would travel at speeds seven to eight times faster than the speed of sound before hitting the target. The weapon system is being developed jointly by the Navy and Army. Each of the three Zumwalt-class destroyers would be equipped with four missile tubes, each with three of the missiles for a total of 12 hypersonic weapons per ship. In choosing the Zumwalt, the Navy is attempting to add to the usefulness of a 7.5 billion US dollars (£5.9 billion) warship that is considered by critics to be an expensive mistake despite serving as a test platform for multiple innovations. The Zumwalt was envisioned as providing land-attack capability with an advanced gun system with rocket-assisted projectiles to open the way for Marines to charge ashore. But the system featuring 155mm guns hidden in stealthy turrets was cancelled because each of the rocket-assisted projectiles cost up to one million dollars (£790,000). Despite the stain on their reputation, the three Zumwalt-class destroyers: Zumwalt, Michael Monsoor and Lyndon B Johnson; remain the Navy’s most advanced surface warships in terms of new technologies. Those innovations include electric propulsion, an angular shape to minimise radar signature, an unconventional wave-piercing hull, automated fire and damage control and a composite deckhouse that hides radar and other sensors. The US is accelerating development because hypersonics have been identified as vital to US national security with “survivable and lethal capabilities”, said James Weber, principal director for hypersonics in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Critical Technologies. “Fielding new capabilities that are based on hypersonic technologies is a priority for the defence department to sustain and strengthen our integrated deterrence, and to build enduring advantages,” he said.
LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers’ signing of Blake Snell became official Saturday, adding the two-time Cy Young Award winner to front a starting rotation stocked with question marks. Snell, who will turn 32 next week, agreed to a five-year, $182 million contract that includes a $52 million signing bonus and $65 million in deferred salary. That deal was pending a physical which Snell passed. The 2018 American League Cy Young Award winner with the Tampa Bay Rays, Snell won the National League Cy Young in 2023 after going 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA for the San Diego Padres. He became a free agent last winter but stayed on the market well into March looking for a long-term deal that never materialized despite his Cy Young history. The Dodgers were involved with Snell at one point before he signed a two-year, $62 million contract with the San Francisco Giants that included an opt-out clause. He exercised that opt-out after going 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in an injury-interrupted season with the Giants. He had 145 strikeouts and just 44 walks in 104 innings. But he made just 20 starts due to two trips to the injured list with a groin injury (likely related to his late signing affecting his preparation for the season). The 20 starts were his fewest in a full season since his rookie year in 2016 (19 starts). Snell goes to the front of a rotation that includes a number of players returning from injury and/or surgery. Shohei Ohtani is expected to return to pitching after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery in September 2023. But his return to the mound will be delayed by surgery on his non-throwing shoulder following the World Series. Yoshinobu Yamamoto finished the 2024 season healthy but missed three months with a rotator cuff strain. Neither he nor Ohtani will be asked to pitch on less than five days of rest and the Dodgers are planning to go with a six-man rotation in 2025. Related Articles Tyler Glasnow’s 2024 season ended early with an elbow injury and his status for 2025 is uncertain. Tony Gonsolin will be returning from Tommy John surgery. Dustin May did not pitch in 2024 while recovering from his own elbow surgery and a torn esophagus. Emmet Sheehan is expected back at some point in 2025 after his Tommy John surgery. Clayton Kershaw is expected to re-sign at some point. But he underwent foot and knee surgeries in November and is not likely to be available for a full season. Walker Buehler and Jack Flaherty are free agents. The Dodgers will start the 2025 season early again with another trip to Asia. They are scheduled to open the regular season with two games against the Chicago Cubs on March 18 and 19 in Tokyo.(The Center Square) – Momentum is with the emerging electric vehicle industry even with many question marks surrounding energy policy as the Trump administration takes office in January, observers of the industry say. “At the local and state level, there's an incredible amount of energy and action taking place to support transportation electrification,” Ben Prochazka, executive director of the Electrification Coalition, told The Center Square. With Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, playing a significant role in President-elect Donald Trump’s election and chosen with Vivek Ramaswamy to head his new Department of Government Efficiency, it is also unlikely that the electric vehicle industry will be neglected nationally. “The hope is that Elon Musk has influence in the new administration, which does look to be the case,” said Prochazka. “Hopefully, that means there’s a great recognition around the economic benefits that exist.” It remains to be seen how electric vehicle incentive or tax credit programs – different than mandates – might be affected by Trump’s moves to cut spending. Mainstream outlets have already proclaimed that Trump has an "anti-EV agenda," as a group of automakers urged him to retain a national $7,500 consumer tax credit for electric vehicle purchases. On the other hand, Prochazka said tariffs and the deregulation of the domestic automotive industry could play a positive role in the electric vehicle industry, depending on how they are "established." “With any new administration, there's always going to be question marks about what the prevailing winds are,” explained Prochazka, whose nonpartisan, nonprofit coalition engages in policy development, advocacy campaigns and consumer education. "E verything has the potential to be reevaluated and then changed." Willett Kempton is in the University of Delaware's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and has research interests in offshore wind power, electric vehicles and public environmental beliefs and values. He agrees with Prochazka that a lot is still up in the air about Trump’s policy approach to the electric vehicle industry. Certain policies could potentially " slow down" growth domestically, he said. Yet, that wouldn't permanently stop growth. “National governments can slow this growth by policy changes, but that doesn’t change the cost advantages nor the long-term trends,” Kempton told The Center Square. In the past, Republicans generally have been notably skeptical about electric vehicles and especially mandates for them, preferring those powered by fossil fuels. Reliability is among the key drivers of the party's choice when it comes to opposition of the broader green agenda of Democrats. Musk’s involvement has the potential to change that skepticism. Prochazka said he is hopeful for that, emphasizing that his organization believes that electric vehicles should not be a partisan issue. “The last election ultimately created more partisan views on electrification,” he said. “We are working really hard to make sure it's clear that transportation electrification is not a red or a blue issue, but it's really about what's better for the country, especially when you look at it through the lens of global competition. We need to maintain our automotive leadership.” For Prochazka, growing the eclectic vehicle industry is an issue of both “national and economic security.” “The automotive sector is a trillion dollar a year industry that has millions and millions of jobs that are a part of the U.S. automotive sector," he said. "So, as the world goes electric, we need to compete so that we can not only maintain our current market share, but hopefully grow it. There’s a global race to electrification.” There are nearly 2.5 million electric vehicles registered throughout the nation, with the highest percentage of those in California. Even then, only 2.5% of the vehicles in California are electric vehicles and only 6.8% of the vehicles sold nationwide in 2024 were electric. Kempton and Prochazka say the transition to electric vehicles will be inevitable and that America should be the nation leading it. “The shift to electric vehicles is worldwide and there are so many advantages to EVs that this will proceed,” Kempton said. “In most territories, clean energy is already the lowest-cost electricity source and largest amount of new generation being installed. These are driven by market forces and producer projections of where the most future growth will be. So, I would not call these ‘movements’ but rather markets or growth trends and adoption of new technologies.” Only 38% of United States adults say they would even consider buying an electric vehicle. Prochazka said he believes that will continue to change, both as there are nationally moves to protect the economic interests of the United States and as more people get familiar with electric vehicles. “We need to also make sure the U.S. is moving as quickly as possible, so that we can compete with the sort of global efforts to electrify,” he said. “Most people have not gotten behind the wheel and have not plugged one in. I think it’s something that people really just need to try, because then they'll realize this is a much better vehicle. It's just about getting people behind the wheel.”Marvel Rivals Previews Free Season 0 Rewards Ahead of Launch
John Prescott, Hull East's MP for 40 years, has been described as "a colossus", "a true giant of the Labour movement" and as "truly unique". He was Britain's longest-serving deputy prime minister and a stalwart Labour politician with strong links to unions. Hull's trio of Labour MPs have all paid tribute to him, as has Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Lord Prescott has also had warm words from political counterparts and organisations in Hull that he made a significant difference to. In announcing his death on Wednesday at the age of 86, his family have asked in lieu of flowers for people, if they wish to do so, to donate to Alzheimer's Research UK. He had lately been living with Alzheimer's disease. 'Staunch defender of working people' Prime minister Starmer led the tributes to Lord Prescott, saying he was "deeply saddened" by his death. "John was a true giant of the Labour movement. He was a staunch defender of working people and a proud trade unionist. During a decade as Deputy Prime Minister, he was one of the key architects of a Labour Government that transformed the lives of millions of people across the nation." He said his legacy would live on "well beyond his lifetime". In Parliament, Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch also had warm words. "A titan of British politics in the 1990s. One of this country's greatest examples of social mobility. And a true patriot." US former Vice-President Al Gore said Lord Prescott...

NoneNASA Awards Test Operations ContractTo the Editor: This morning as I read the Ukiah Daily Journal, when I came to the editorial cartoon by Stahler calling Trump’s cabinet picks STUPID and showing Trump smirking as if he had gotten one over on everybody I just couldn’t restrain myself any longer and am writing this letter on behalf of the silent minority of Mendocino county and the silent majority who spoke in the recent election. I won’t greatly articulate why Trump was elected and Tommy Hine in his last letter said it well. “Democrats. Party of long noses.” Or for another source from the left speaking to their party, read the recent column by Bill Maher in the New York Times, “There’s no monopoly on stupid” and he states that the Democratic party had become a “Portlandia sketch.” I’m not naive and don’t think that this next four years is going to fix all the problems of our country, especially the economic national debt of 36 trillion dollars. This I know though that the average working class American is sick of woke ideology teaching that there is more than two genders and imposing these values on our children. You claim to believe in science and it doesn’t get more basic than this. We are sick of having these values force fed through our educational institutions on these same children further confusing the difficult transition from childhood through puberty. We are sick that there are puberty blockers being given to children and worse, mutilation of their bodies. We are sick that one penny of our tax dollars is spent to provide this for prisoners. We are sick that men who call themselves women are competing against women in women’s sports. Women have fought too long and hard for their rights to see them stolen by a bunch of cowards. I had a dream about a year ago wherein I remembered the scene from the original Titanic movie that I watched when I was a child. The one where a man disguised himself as a woman to save himself because he was a coward. Unless you think I am exaggerating there are tampon dispensers in the boys room at Eagle Peak middle school. We are sick of parental rights being taken away by the government. We are sick of illegal immigration being called immigration and having a porous border. Are we a sovereign nation or not? We are sick of having electric mandates force fed on us when we are still looking for and trying to find alternative energy sources. The problem with solar and wind without our current carbon and nuclear sources, is storage. That is why the tax incentives for solar have gone away because we don’t need more production as much as we need storage. We understand that electricity to power these vehicles has to be produced by some other source. We are sick of the emphasis on “Climate change” as if it is the greatest threat to humanity. Personally having grown up under the threat of nuclear annihilation and this threat which is still quite alive scares me way more than the idea that we won’t find a way to produce the world’s energy demands. Necessity is the mother of invention, we need to diligently keep working on alternatives, but you can’t stop the means of production in the mean time. That is a major effect of what destroyed the economy during the pandemic as small business was forced to shutdown and it has been a huge contributor to the huge inflation of the last four years. Poor nations are struggling to produce their energy needs with our current technologies so don’t count on them to really be on board to the current solutions that aren’t. I don’t read the UDJ because I like to be insulted but because I like to keep up on local news, events, and obituaries. I am part of this community and have been since 1975. Both of my children were born and raised here and I love this community. If you disagree with me that is fine. I will gladly have a conversation with anyone of opposing viewpoints and do it with respect and kindness. -Randy Dorn, Redwood Valley
Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his name from contention for the US attorney general role in the new Trump administration despite being nominated for the position by the President-elect. Gaetz, who resigned from the US House of Representatives last week, was recently the subject of an Ethics Committee probe into allegations he had sex with an underage 17-year-old girl. He has denied wrongdoing. The Republican released a statement on X on Thursday saying he believed his nomination was becoming a “distraction” to the new Trump administration. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” he wrote. “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump's DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1. I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. “I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I'm certain he will Save America.” Gaetz’s nomination was an early test of Trump's power over Congress, where his Republican Party will hold majorities in both chambers next year. Gaetz was disliked by many fellow Republicans for having orchestrated the ouster last year of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, throwing the House into chaos for weeks. Republicans in the Senate had bristled at the idea of being asked to vote on Gaetz without seeing the findings of the House Ethics Committee's investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct. Gaetz earned a reputation as a firebrand and loyal Trump ally during his time in the House and his nomination was viewed as an indication Trump would follow through on his vows to use the Justice Department to exact retribution against his foes. "He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect," Trump wrote on Truth Social. Since Trump's pick, a handful of Republican senators had either directly questioned the pick or said they would want to see the findings of the ethics report on Gaetz, raising questions of whether he could win sufficient votes for confirmation in a chamber where Republicans are expected to hold a 53-47 majority. "There was perhaps some information out there that the president was not aware of when he made the original recommendation," said Republican Senator Mike Rounds. He described Gaetz's withdrawal as the Senate fulfilling its duty to advise presidents on nominations. With ReutersInside abandoned mortuary with grisly tools and medical files left untouched
